Wow, thanks for all the advice and help guys, much appreciated. As to the PC vs. console question I have always played PC games so I don't have much experience on both ends but I don't see why you can't have the best of both worlds and play both.

IN terms of peripherals I remember when buying my Ps1 looongg ago that I needed to get a memory card with it, is that the same for the 2?

I decided to get the PS2 and will let you know what I think of it this weekend. Any other gaming goodness suggestions would be great as I have no clue whats good and not in console games. First person shooters would be cool as my daughter and I played Call to Duty this weekend and loved it.

Yup, that is if you plan to save your games. Make sure you get a PS2 memory card as the PS1 memory card will only work for PS1 games. Unfortunately the PS2 memory card will only work for PS2 games.

My favorite PS2 games(and thus suggestions):

Ring of Red -- An older PS2 game. Turn-based strategy games with real-time combat. Think WW2/Korea featuring mechs.

Zone of the Enders: the 2nd Runner -- The first ZoE was a good game, but people complained that is was short, had repetitive missions(mostly saving innocent civillians), and the game's hero, 14-year-old Leo Stenbuck, was more than a little whiney. The sequel is bigger, has better missions, and a new hero. Even Leo's grown up in this one.

Xenosaga -- A contraversial choice. People seem to either love or hate this game. This usually centers around the fact that this game's story is told in massive cutscenes which can total up to an hour between gameplay(this game has a lot of story). Aside from that, it's a fun CRPG.

Guilty Gear X2 -- One of the absolute best 2D fighting games ever.

Ratchet & Clank series -- One half of the two biggest innovations in 3D platforming. R&C: Going Commando even has an option to play the game as a first-person shooter.

Works fine on my PS2.
Works on mine, too.

Yes, and save your PS1 cards as well since you need those for PS1 games. And save the controlers since they work with both.

Speaking of PS2s, anyone know anything about an easy way of axing the region lock without resorting to installing mod chips? Because Uts and I could get a good deal on Evangelion 2 and Transformers Tatekai...

I don't know about the region issue. I do remember hearing about Anthologies not working on the PS2. Though if others here say it does, then I'll probably go hunt it down.

I have FF Anthology. Works fine. However, to get it working fast you have to modify the PS2 drivers for faster CD read speeds.

Just picked up that one for $20. Also got ICO, which I've heard is rather excellent. Also got FFX for $20, and that's turning out to be worth the investment.

I bought a PS2 with my tax return last year mainly because I wanted a DVD player for my TV (and it works well, too).

The slew of FPS are decent but the PC one are honestly better. But for a pointless yet fun shooter get Timesplitters 2.

Other good stuff are GGX2, CvS2...both decent fighting games.

Racing you get either GT3 or GT4...nothing else. Yes, some have shinier but GT has more of things to do...and multiplayer is fun.

Just watch ya looking for in entertainment way?

I love my PS2. The game selection is unmatched and it saved me a bunch of money on a DVD player. The only thing that really annoys me is that I can't diable the parental controls and have to enter a code every time I want to play a DVD (you don't need a code for games, so I can kill 600 people in GTA no sweat but I need to put in a code to watch Back to the Future)

Ours did that for a while, too back when we first got it (did it with my Cowboy Bebop DVDs), but I was able to turn it off. Unfortunately, I can't remember how.

I actually configured mine from the start...I believe to actually get rid of the parental code you have to eliminate the saved file on your memory card and start over fresh with the PS2.

If you like anime and you're willing to sit through the longest cutscenes ever to grace an RPG, do get Xenosaga. The gameplay isn't as magnificent as either of the FFX titles currently available for PS2 but the story more than makes it worth the money.

I'm getting the PS2 after work today and I browsed their gaming section at Bestbuy. I intend on getting FF X (19.99) and was tempted to get Enter the Matrix for 29.99. I've heard some very mixed reviews for this game. Is it worth getting or os it plain awful?

It's passable. I will have to admit the bullet time(Called 'focus' in the game) is ridiculously funny to toy with. It's no gaming masterpeice, but if you need something to pass the time it's okay.

Enter the Matrix isn't worth the disc it's printed on.

If you must have third person bullet time, play Max Payne again.

IIRC, when the PS2 first came out, one of the first arguments for getting one was because it played dvds too and a dvd player cast about the same, so you could get a dvd player and games console for the price of just a dvd player, but now with prices dropping and stuff that's not true anymore.
Personaly I've never had any problems with the dvd portion of the PS2, it plays them great, no sound troubles of skipping, etc.
When it comes to game play I find the PS2 unsurpassable. Although this is taking into account that I don't play my PS2 as much as I used to because I'm either working or on here. But it's always great for blasting ass at Timesplitters or touching up men in tights on the Smackdown series.
The fact that it can play PS1 games is also pretty damn good.
The only problems I have with the PS2 that are pretty small are: the fan, makes a bit of noise which gets anoying sometimes, but if you turn the TV or music up then it's no problem and that it can't play Smash Bros(God I love that game!)!

I'd recommend getting a PS2, even if you don't play it much as it's just so much fun when you do and when you train up enough, you get bet money on Timesplitters and win £50 in one night! :D
