A science challenge

Post by RayCav of ASVS »

well, more of an engineering one....

design a craft that can transport a large portion of people across the Atlantic in a cost-effective matter

It must be "echo-friendly", too

Speed is only a secondary factor

Sailing ship with modern automation and equipment. No fuel costs, minimal environmental impact from operations.

It can be powered by the stupidity of the people! If that doesn't work, then the railgun sleds.

I hereby patent the Darkstar Singularity drive (tm) which will provide an infinite amount of power for my high speed cruise ship. It'll carry 6-8000 passengers across the ocean at record breaking speeds and be enviro friendly at the same time.

One of the big windjammers. The last generation windjammer were enourmous and could haul a lot of people and cargo.

For style though I'd go with McKay clipper Ship. Probably Flying Cloud.

anyway, to be serious....

Proposal 1

A solar powered airship. This would be mostly for mass transit, but could also be a good luxury cruise in the air

Proposal 2

Hyper-advanced windjammer. I predict cruise companies would make a killing as the capitalize on the "reborn romantisicm" of windjammers.

Damn, you beat me to it. I was going to say intercontinental mass drivers. After all, you have the whole Atlantic to splash down in.

I also suggested this as a way to transport fuel and supplies to a mine on the North Shore of Lake Athabasca in my engineering economics class, but for some reason the prof didn't like it. :)

That'd be impressive.

How about a current luxury ship design except that its fuel would be hydrogen extracted from the water its crossing on.

I would take a ironclad and attach an orion engine to it. Then burn tons of coal to make clouds so the passengers don't get sunburns. To power the passenger needs I'd use a fission reactor, and use the seawater as coolant, so it disperses the radiation harmlessly into the environment.

That is by FAR the best design yet

Airship! Zepeliners!

Have you seen the footage from the hindenburg?
Amazing.

Think of it like a luxury cruiser without the vawes making you seasick.

I really love the feel of the airships. Have you seen the aircarrier one that the US had in the 20's n 30's? It was an airship that carried 5 fighters (biplanes). That looks so cool.

(Before anyone starts telling me that airships all met with disasters, I must point out that modern airships are safer than airplanes.)

IMPORTANT RULE: Nothing Darkstar emits is 'good' for the environment.
