UK's new 'arms deal' with Iraq
Pretty minor stuff really
Not really an arms deal, more of a police arms deal- why it's causing an uproar I don't know.
What I find odd is the reference to 'submachine guns'. I wasn't aware the UK had any significant SMG models of their own.

Heckler&Koch was bought by an UK firm after the G11 had been rejected by the German military, IIRC. HKs are quite popular with police forces all over the world.Vympel wrote:Pretty minor stuff really

The Germans bought it back.dummnutzer wrote:

The Thompson is an American design. The last SMG the British had was the famous Sten.UK does have the Thompson sub-machinegun. But it is a very old design

No, the L2 Sterling (which was designed to replace the Sten) was the last SMG produced by the British. Incidently, this weapon was seen in Star Wars as the E11 blaster rifle...Vympel wrote:The Thompson is an American design. The last SMG the British had was the famous Sten.

I'd suspect the article is either wrong, or a British company is simply marketing an SMG design for someone else.

AK-47's aren't very good weapons for police forces in any form, and modern militaries don't put too much emphasis on SMG's or handguns, which are the main police weapons. Iraq was no exception to this. So they really don't need to import guns for them. Now the AK-47's that where imported for the new Iraqi army are another story..evilcat4000 wrote:Iraq has plently of Ak-47s and other kind of guns lying around. They may not need to import small arms.
