The application for the $250 award requires an essay on ''why you are proud of your white heritage'' and a recent picture to ''confirm whiteness.''

''Evidence of bleaching will disqualify applicants,'' says the application, issued by the university's College Republicans.

Jason Mattera, 20, who is president of the College Republicans, said the group is parodying minority scholarships.

''We think that if you want to treat someone according to character and how well they achieve academically, then skin color shouldn't really be an option,'' he said. ''Many people think that coming from a white background you're automatically privileged, you're automatically rich and your parents pay full tuition. That's just not the case.''

The stunt has angered some at the university, but the administration is staying out of the fray. The school's provost said it is a student group's initiative and is not endorsed by Roger Williams.

Mattera, who is of Puerto Rican descent, is himself a recipient of a $5,000 scholarship open only to a minority group.

''No matter what my ethnicity is, I'm making a statement that scholarships should be given out based on merit and need,'' Mattera told the Providence Journal.

His group took out a full-page ad in last week's issue of the university's student newspaper to tout the scholarship, which was for $50 until two donors came forward to add $100 each during the weekend, Mattera said.

It's not the first brush with controversy for the group. The school temporarily froze the Republicans' money in the fall during a fight over a series of articles published in its monthly newsletter. One article alleged that a gay-rights group indoctrinates students into homosexual sex.

while i can't say i agree with their methods i do agree with their principles. scholarships should be given out based on financial need and academic merit rather than trivial issues such as race.

I think it's amusing and hypocritical that a hispanic student who got a $5,000 scholarship open specifically to minorities is professing his hatred for the same scholarship that's making it possible for him to go to school.

Saw it on CNN this morning in the gym, they were ripping into the leader of the protest for being part of the Hispanic group which recieves a 5000 dollar scholarship, he didnt come out of that looking to good.

Yes, I found that quite ironic myself. If he really wishes to make a point, and not look like a hypocritical fuckwit, he should publically renounce his race-based scholarship, and repay the granting organization for all the benefits he recieved from that scholarship, adjusted for inflation.

I agree with it and I see nothing wrong with offering a scholarship for white students (DISCLAIMER: I'm so fucking white I make the new-fallen snow look like Isaac friggin' Hayes), but the stated agenda here is really hypocritical and pisses me off because of it.

Because the Crusaders were a bunch of thugs who took advantage of the situation within the Byzantine Empire to load up on everything of value that the Eastern Church had in it's possesion. The entire history of the the Byzantine Empire's involvement in the Crusades was to try and get the crusaders through their territory as quickly and with as little damage as possible, and then use them to get rid of the Empire's enemies. Unfortunately for the Emperors, a lot of crusaders didn't like that.

Yeah, I saw that. When I read your question I had the beginnings of a DoZ moment. It wasn't a full one, as you can see that I kept my response to under twenty paragraphs and didn't reference three seperate Byzantine emperors and their military histories.

Now then, it says whites is the evil in leetspeak. I think leetspeak is evil and although I read it refuse to use it. God forbid that anyone ever try to devise phonetics for it.
