As soon as this affirmative action crap comes up here at UT, some of us are planning a 'Affirmative Action Bake Sale'.

Prices for cookies:
African Americans - .25
Hispanics - .50
White Males and Asians - 1.50

Make cookie ownership equal!

You can criticize a policy even though you take advantage of it. Who turns down $5000 dollars? Not saying it's not hypocritical to then criticize the program that helped him, but when you let the fox guard the henhouse, you don't blame the fox for what happens. If you put an offer of a huge amount of money with no strings attatched, people shouldn't be expected to refuse.

This is, quite frankly, idiotic. Protesting affirmative action with a scholarship for whites only completely ignores the fact there are plenty of scholarships reserved for Italians, Irish, Germans, Scandanavian, Greek, Russian, Polish, and every other type of white person out there. It comes off looking like they're protesting scholarships reserved for blacks and Hispanics even though such scholarhips exist for whites as well (though I've never heard of a scholarship for ANY white person, there are so many different ethnic scholarship funds it doesn't make any difference).

You've got to be shitting me. I'm irish/italian and I've never even heard of these supposed white scholarships let alone actually gotten any offers.

If I'm shitting you, then my sister robbed a bank, because she got around $1000 from an Italian-American scholarship fund.

I know for a fact that there are scholarships for people with native american blood, and I qualify for it even though I'm mostly caucasian

So white people can take a dig at some of these "non-white" scholarships~ Not something you hear about often

Roger Williams University is a joke....hell i didn't know they even had minorities at RWU. Do you know what RWU really stands for? Rich White Underachievers. It's a shitty state school with a fancy name. They passed out draft deferments like candy to stupid rich white kids in the 60's and 70's so they could study Beerology for 4 years. For that it earned the name Rodger Dodger U!

Definitely Irish scholarships, especially if you're in the Northeast. Swedish I'd imagine are rarer, but could still be found.

I would argue in response to these guys that if the difference between the number of minorities attendng college and the number of whites attending college wasn't so huge, it would indeed be appropriate to remove the vast majority of ethnically driven scholarships. Unfortunately, there is a vast difference between the number of whites who attend college and the number of minorities who attend college. For a variety of different factors, minorities often do not have the same opportunity that the average white american has of attending college. The scholarships offered to minorities are an important component that helps make college more affordable for minorities, and helps to make it a more realistic option. It basically boils down to a wealth issue. College is expensive. On average, whites are more financially able to pay for college than minorities. While there certainly are whites who can't afford college as well, that sitiuation does not occur as frequently as it does among minorities.

It depends on which minority you're talking about. The group most often penalized by college ethnic quotas is actually Asians. One of the California universities reported a sharp spike in the increase of Asian students when they dropped their affirmative action programs. As a rather amusing side-note, this spike came largely at the expense of white students whose parents lobbied furiously for the change
