Yep. There have been many images I've shown people on the Net only to have them go "Duh, it's SO Photoshopped, look I can see the smear lines..." and then for me to show them an official site validating it.

Some people are just born paranoid idiots I guess.

Spanky The Dolphin wrote:ABC recently asked a Chinese government official on that protestor's status.

His responce was "...not killed, I think."
He was on "60 Minutes" or Dateline a few years back giving an interview. IIRC hes no longer in China and now a political refugee.

Well, thank God for that. I've always been so moved whenever I see footage of this man against the Red Army. Sometimes I forget that the freedoms I take for granted are matters of life and death in other parts of the world. So, it's always nice to be remined of that, by Gandalf's av.

And what Spanky quoted...just chills me.
"In the new trilogy, Anakin Skywalker portrays a damning indictment of technology's modern dehumanization of mankind through Hayden Christensen's lifeless, almost inhuman performance. There is a river of tragedy in every robotic line he utters, a horrific monotonal indication of his cyborgal fate."-Dr. Albert Oxford, PhD

if I recall correctly the Denial of Survace attack, created a bit of confusion in the Chinese Military & police organization, trying to round up those that had escaped the crushing of Yianmen Square. Most went to Hong Kong with help from the Chinese Underworld, got british passports etc. One guy did it the hardway, and treked through most of china. Finally arriving in Mongolia where the Mongolians were more then willing to help him escape.

I'd have to say the most powerful image for me was a single picture, still fresh in my mind, of a Buddhist monk who had purposefully lit himself on fire, stating to all the world that he refused to live under the Chinese regime.

I remeber the tank guy, just a normal joe in damn ironed shirt and still carrying his briefcase he simply walked out in-front of the tanks, the tanks stop and tried to go around him but he just keep moving infront of him, finaly according to the story the officer in charge ordered the driver of the lead tank to run him down or be shot himself

It was real big shit back then watching this go down at that age

Are you sure you don't mean the monk protesting the Diem regime in Vietnam?

There is another famous tank image from recent times. It was taken during the last intifada two years ago. The picture shows an Israeli tank pointing its main armament at a group Palestinians lying on the ground very close to the tank.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Just so Lazy Raptor and the other youngsters are clear on what Rogue 9 meant - in this case "crushed" is not a metaphor or hyperbole. The protest was literally crushed. The wave of tanks after the group in the photo simply drove over the protesters camped in Tiamenen square. Many of the students had tanks roll over them while they were sleeping in tents. Not everyone died immediately - some of the students were cut in half, had limbs torn off, etc. and took hours to die.

Pisses me off that some asshats think this was photoshopped. They need to put down the Nintendo and get out in the real world more often.

This incident clearly shows how inhuman the Chineese goverment is. Perhaps someday the people responsible for the massacre would be brough to justice.

You mean Thich Quang Duc who just sat there in the street and burnt alive? Immolating yourself that way for your beliefs is just amazing.

as i recall the story behind htat photo is that he didn't he flinch until the moment of death...

dunno about the truth behind it.

and at 17 i have to admit i've heard of Tianaman Square in passing, and of course i've heard the myth about the photo.

but i can guarantee you maybe 99.9% of the people in my school know less than me, barring teachers.

To change the tone a little bit with a few what ifs:

Would mainland China ever accept rule from Tiawan?
Would Taiwan now ever accept rule from a Democratic mainland China?
Were the Taiwanese, American, and who ever else to free the people of mainland China would they similarily let East Turkistan and Tibet go?
