I think it was a Calico with some plastic bits glued on.

Okay, I found my ST:FC disk, an I can say that weapon is most definately a Calico. One of the "plastic bits" attached to it appeared to be a scope. Trouble is, the it's is mounted so low that the weapon's big helical magazine would make the scope useless. There's Trek ergonomics for you

But wouldn't that show that the Borg had success against such weapon? I mean, several billion humans (many with projectile weapons) against a few measly Borg drones?

Surely the Borg have some sort of defense against projectile weapons?
I bet it was sheer numbers and disorganization among the humans.

How if it was a small sphere? A few billion versus a few hundred Borg? Even if they were all disorganized, they soon realize that their weapon can kill the mechanical zombies.

Remember also they might be able to eventually arrange for help from their home.

Yes but by that time, humanity would've joined forces to fight against the Borg, should the Borg begin to lose. If the Borg sends out a message saying they need reinforcements, the signal would take 200 years to reach it's destination (the number came from an ENT ep).

Remember the "Inter-plexing" beacon the Borg were building on the Enterprise's main deflector? I get the distict impression from the dialogue that that could contact the 21st cantury Borg in the Delta Quadrant a heluva lot quicker than 200 years. Why could the sphere not have used something similar?

Also remember that the Borg had to set up the beacon on the Enterprise's main deflector, indicating it needed the deflector dish to function as part of the transmitter (it would probably have sucked a good amount of power as well). It might not have been possible for that 22nd-century research ship to support such a beacon, even after extensive Borg modification...
