State Song: Know it?
Do you know your State Song? And if so, when did you learn it?
I learned the Minnesota state song, "Hail! Minnesota," in 5th grade.

Spanky The Dolphin wrote:I don't know if Iowa even has one. But this is the first time I've heard of a state song.
Iowa does, although I never learned it growing up. We did learn the University of Iowa fight song in grade school though. Here's the state song, the only thing that is vaguely familiar to me is that it is set to "Oh Tannenbaum.
Iowa State Song
Written by S.H.M. Byers
To the music of Tannenbaum
You asked what land I love the best, Iowa, tis Iowa,
The fairest State of all the west, Iowa, O! Iowa,
From yonder Misissippi's stream
To where Missouri's waters gleam
O! fair it is as poet's dream, Iowa, in Iowa.
See yonders fields of tasseled corn, Iowa in Iowa,
Where plenty fills her golden horn, Iowa in Iowa,
See how her wonderous praries shine.
To yonder sunset?s purpling line,
O! happy land, O! land of mine, Iowa, O! Iowa.
And she has made whose laughing eyes, Iowa, O! Iowa.
To him whose loves were Paradise, Iowa, O! Iowa
O! happiest fate that e?er was known.
Such eyes to shine for one alone,
To call such beauty all his own. Iowa, O! Iowa
Go read the story of thy past. Iowa, O! Iowa
What glorious deeds, what fame thou hast! Iowa, O! Iowa
So long as time?s great cycle runs,
Or nations weep their fallen ones,
Thou?lt not forget thy patriot sons, Iowa, O! Iowa
[/quote]
By the pricking of my thumb,
Something wicked this way comes.

Whoever knocks.
Something wicked this way comes.
Open, locks,
Whoever knocks.

For people in the U.S. here's a good place to go if you're interested in finding out your state's song. State Songs
Some of them even have MIDI versions of the song.

Heroes of the ocean
Noble people
Brave nation, Imortal
Rise today again
The splendor of Portugal
In the brumes of the memories
Oh nation hear the voice
Of your igregious fathers
Which will lead you to victory
To Arms! To Arms!
On the land and on the Sea
To Arms! To Arms!
For the nation, Fight
against the cannons, march, march!
Rise high the invincible flag
In the bright light of your sky!
Tell to the entire Europe:
Portugal has not perished
Kiss the fecund soil
The ocean, roaring with love,
And your victorious arm
Gave new worlds to the World!
To Arms! To Arms!
On the land and on the Sea
To Arms! To Arms!
For the nation, Fight
against the cannons, march, march!
Salute the rising Sun
Above a new dawn
Let be the echo of an affront
The signal to return.
Beams of that strong aurore
are like kisses of a mother
that guard us, sustain us
against the injuries of luck
To Arms! To Arms!
On the land and on the Sea
To Arms! To Arms!
For the nation, Fight
against the cannons, march, march!

Hail! Minnesota
Minnesota, hail to thee!
Hail to thee our state so dear!
Thy light shall ever be
A beacon bright and clear.
Thy sons and daughters true
Will proclaim thee near and far.
They shall guard thy fame
And adore thy name;
Thou shalt be their Northern Star.
Like the stream that bends to sea,
Like the pine that seeks the blue,
Minnesota, still for thee,
Thy sons are strong and true.
From thy woods and waters fair,
From thy prairies waving far,
At thy call they throng,
With their shout and song,
Hailing thee their Northern Star.
Hail to thee our state so dear!
Thy light shall ever be

Why does our state song have to suck so much?! They should make the logical decision and change it to, "New York, New York" sung by Frank Sinatra.

Weird, I coulda sworn Indianas song was "Back Home Again In Indiana" but apparently its "On the Banks of the Wabash"
'Round my Indiana homesteads wave the cornfields,
In the distance loom the woodlands clear and cool.
Oftentimes my thoughts revert to scenes of childhood,
Where I first received my lessons, nature's school.
But one thing there is missing in the picture,
Without her face it seems so incomplete.
I long to see my mother in the doorway,
As she stood there years ago, her boy to greet.
[CHORUS]
Oh, the moonlight's fair tonight along the Wabash,
From the fields there comes the breath of newmown hay.
Through the sycamores the candle lights are gleaming,
On the banks of the Wabash, far away.
Many years have passed since I strolled by the river,
Arm in arm, with sweetheart Mary by my side,
It was there I tried to tell her that I loved her,
It was there I begged of her to be my bride.
Long years have passed since I strolled thro' there churchyard.
She's sleeping there, my angel, Mary dear,
I loved her, but she thought I didn't mean it,
Still I'd give my future were she only here.

"Arise children of the fatherlandI suppose that's the reason why the verse is so quietly nice, and polite.
The portuguese is all about fight for the country, march against the cannons, die for the flag..
The day of glory has arrived
Against us tyranny's
Bloody standard is raised
Listen to the sound in the fields
The howling of these fearsome soldiers
They are coming into our midst
To cut the throats of your sons and consorts
To arms citizens
Form your battalions
March, march
Let impure blood
Water our furrows
What do they want this horde of slaves
Of traitors and conspiratorial kings?
For whom these vile chains
These long-prepared irons?
Frenchmen, for us, ah! What outrage
What methods must be taken?
It is us they dare plan
To return to the old slavery!
What! These foreign cohorts!
They would make laws in our courts!
What! These mercenary phalanxes
Would cut down our warrior sons
Good Lord! By chained hands
Our brow would yield under the yoke
The vile despots would have themselves be
The masters of destiny
Tremble, tyrants and traitors
The shame of all good men
Tremble! Your parricidal schemes
Will receive their just reward
Against you we are all soldiers
If they fall, our young heros
France will bear new ones
Ready to join the fight against you
Frenchmen, as magnanimous warriors
Bear or hold back your blows
Spare these sad victims
That they regret taking up arms against us
But not these bloody despots
These accomplices of Bouillé
All these tigers who pitilessly
Ripped out their mothers' wombs
We shall enter into the pit
When our elders will no longer be there
There we shall find their ashes
And the mark of their virtues
We are much less jealous of surviving them
Than of sharing their coffins
We shall have the sublime pride
Of avenging or joining them
Drive on sacred patriotism
Support our avenging arms
Liberty, cherished liberty
Join the struggle with your defenders
Under our flags, let victory
Hurry to your manly tone
So that in death your enemies
See your triumph and our glory!"
I like the French national anthem better than the Portuguese national anthem.

You and me both. In therms of sheer violence, nothing beats the French anthem.
But I want to add that the French anthem is focused on the internal threat of the nobles, while the Portuguese focus against foreign invasion.
More precisely, it appeared late last century when our old "allies" the british made us an ultimatum. Only because we wanted half of Africa! It's just unfair
The last phrase of the chorus was, in the original version, "against the british march, march!". It was latter changed for obvious reasons
