You guys, perhaps you should ask about forming said cult. As I recall the kast time the "worship" got out of hand Z wasn't entirely thrilled by it.

Maybe it should be renamed the "Zaia Fanclub" (for good, wholsome simplicity) or "The Zaia Appreciation Society." (if you want to be long-winded and pompous) "Cult" has some negative connotations. :( Of course, I don't want to offend Zaia - and if it offends her, then forget about it.

I'm probably going to get lynched for this, but I do find it somewhat strange that the females on this board are treated with such fanatical devotion by such a large group of people. I imagine that the girls themselves like it to a certain extent (attention is always good) but I gather that they would get sick of it eventually and just want to be treated like normal members of the board.

You do have a point Kernel, one which I agree on. I meant my "secretary" thing to be fun, not offensive; I certainly don't want to be appear like some obsessive wanker.

I know you aren't like that, and it's cute when one guy makes a comment like that, but when half the board is doing it on a regular basis, it becomes damn annoying for the other half of the board and probably even more for the girls in question.

Like I said, I know no one is doing this purposefully, but I think it needed to be said how bad this can get sometimes.

Yup. A little attention is sweet, but obsessive devotion can get be creepy for a lady. Especially when she's not around to defend herself.

IMHO, I'd kill the fanclub talk guys. It's all fun and in jest, but I agree that the ladies of sdnet mostly...

There's attention and just weirdness.

And she doesn't have to honestly defend herself given, that whether she comes back or not is really not at the heart of this fanclub(put it this way...if she never comes back sorta makes this fanclub look a little more then some strange homage  ).

So better naming would be better for more for you guys then her, and well she'll find out, and probably get a good laugh, not much more.

Indeed, she will find out. In fact, she has; y'see, I'm a responsible wierdo: I already PMed her about mine, and she said it was ok, and even laughed at our "growing numbers" so to speak (yes, all four of us). So, thus far, no big deal, no harm done, etc.

If any CoZ member does, actually, y'know, something really cult-like or creepy, they shall be thrashed. Only I get to be creepy. :D

Wait, I should have picked a better position.
I turn 18 in December. Hello old man.
I turn 15 in May. Hey there grandpa.

On topic, this Zaia Cult is slightly amusing, but.. my thoughts echo Kernal's and Drewcifer's. Zaia is a member of this board, just like everyone else. I don't see a Mitth`raw`nuruodo fan club, or a Dalton cult, why give one to Zaia?

But then, I can answer that question: Zaia is a female, posting on a sci-fi message board. That is rather rare guys. Look at the figures. 1539 members, 15 of which are in the SoS. That's less than 1%. Females on this board are not very common, so I guess we like to admire those who have chosen to grace us with their presence.

Well, I'm female, but I'm not a member of the SoS. I guess that improves the apparent ratio a little bit.

yes, it would. But when you think about the ratio of males:females across the world, or even North America/West-ish Europe (where most members come from, IIRC), it's a pretty huge difference. Geeks tend to be male, I guess. *shrugs*

Actually, there is a Dalton cult. It's called... *drum roll* Dunkin Daltons!

Yep, that was amazingly stupid. I'll admit it. But hey, I needed to do that, since Dalton has declared himself Lord High Priest without so much as the courtesy of a PM. :(

Bah, I don't need to be in any childish appreciation club. I'm already her friend. :P

But I honestly agree with Kernel about this. An occasional flirt once and a while isn't so bad, but when it's nearly a dozen people spaming several threads just for the chance to see who can masturbate over her the most, it frankly is just plain and simply annoying as fuck.

The spread here at GaTech is about 70% male and 30% female, and it's even bigger in the college of engineering. The aerospace department has one of the highest percentages, around 20% female. The college of computing has a ratio of about 7.3:1. It's not sexism; I haven't experienced a bit of it.

Maybe there is just a tendency for geeks to be male. Not that it discourages me in the least.

He's right.

In the modern cultural useage, geeks are basically nerds that get into things without really knowing what they're about, and make a spectical out of it.

Nerds don't, and I'm glad that I am a nerd rather than a geek.

Geek

de: Geek fr:Geek pl:Geek The definition of geek has changed considerably over the years. Below are some definitions of the word "geek", in order from oldest (and most archaic) to newest. All but the first are still in use.

A person who swallows live animals, bugs, etc., as a form of entertainment at fairs etc. This often included biting the heads off of chickens. The Geek would usually perform in a "geek pit."

A derogatory term for one with low social skills, often with high intelligence. It is theorised that many of these people have Asperger's syndrome.

A person who is into technology, especially computing and new media. Comparable with the classic definition of hacker.

A person with a devotion to something in a way that places him or her outside the mainstream. This could be due to the intensity, depth, or subject of their interest.
note the first definition in a dictionary is the most used definition, as per standard dictionary protocols.
