Would-be Chicago public school principals would have to pass a new oral and written exam and produce an adequate writing sample under a plan that could make Chicago one of the toughest places in the nation to win a job as principal, officials said Friday.
Chicago Public Schools CEO Arne Duncan said the new criteria are needed to ensure "the best and the brightest'' will replace what could be a record number of retiring principals in the next four years, roughly 550. "It's important to raise the bar,'' Duncan said.
School administrators who actually have to know something? Say it ain't so!

after the recent post about the guy that knew nothing about finances yet gave a lecture to a group of chinese students using a beginner's book, i'd say something like this is a good idea.
"It's you Americans. There's something about nipples you hate. If this were Germany, we'd be romping around naked on the stage here."
They're not giving any examples of what these exams would consist of. For all we know they might just be at the level of the regular standardized tests the students have to take. That'd still probably give them the toughest standards for high school principals in the country. Yeah, I'd probably also find it demeaning if I wanted to run a high school and the results came back, "You have a sixth grade reading and writing level, and when I say sixth grade I mean rural Alabama sixth grade. Plus you speak as though you learned the English language from watching talk shows. You're not qualified."
Come to think of it, I don't think my high school principle said an understandable word during the entire four years I was stuck at that hellhole.
