Haitian revolt gaining momentum

Post by Col. Crackpot »

Rebels claim they will capture the capital in 15 days. US Marines arrive to re-enfore the embassy, but the US blames Aristide and says it will not get involved in supressing the revolt.

What is the rebel's position towards the U.S.? Are they likely to attack the Embassy?

i'd say not likely. The US government has publicly blamed the incompetence and corruption of the Aristeide government for the uprising. The Marines are most likely protection against looters and securing safe passage for the foreigners (mostly American, Canadian and French) in Haiti.

Have they expressed an clear manifesto? All I've heard so far that they are sick of the current Haitian president, and want to force a change of government.

Of course, we put him in power. But seeing as we have officially decided to stay out of it, perhaps they are going to respect that standing. Besides, once, and if, they remove Aristide, they will probably try to seek validation and support from the US and UN.

Admittedly, though, we didn't do alot of research into his policies, etc. before helping re-install him. all we cared about was that he was "Democratically" Elected, whatever that entails. As I understand it (According to NPR and on-scene reports) Is that he's a grade A buttwipe.

They don't really have the numbers or resources to do so even if they were so inclined (they aren't). The funny thing is that this rebellion is being led by a relative handful of dissidents, but since Haiti has no standing army or national guard and the police aren't interested in fighting a war, these few rebels have been making unheard of strides considering their tiny numbers.

You mean this insurrection is too small to overwhelm an embassy garrison? :wtf: That's not much of a rebel army.

Well, the rebels probably know that if they fire on US Marines they're fucked six ways to Sunday.

Good for them, lets hope the next Hatian Government actually does something to improve the standard of living of the average Hatian.
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

Here's a blog by someone in Haiti. "The conflict is incredibly complex. The rebels for the most part, are baddies. In my opinion, Aristide and his regime are also baddies."

That doesn't sound complex, both sides are shit heads. Not suprising for a third world civil war. And of course the product of another useless intervention.

So now the question is do we intervene again, or just let Haiti go to hell?

Maybe we should just invade and turn it into a US territory, an island paradise like Porto Rico

It's funny how you speak of Haiti going to hell as if it's something that hasn't already happened yet.

All right, fine. Rephrase: Do we intervene again or let Haiti descend to the seventh circle of Hell from the second or wherever it is now.

Unless they're willing to become our colony, fuck 'em. We've saved their ass once already and they fucked it up.

We've saved them more then once and they where effectively a colony for a time, US Marines occupied Haiti from 1915 to 1934 following political chaos and violence. They where only withdrawn with Roosevelt came up with his good neighbor policy, which likely did far more harm then good to this shithole.

Well, remember. Haiti is only half of the island. And the use has an odd thing about not going halfway.

I don't think we'd overrun the Dominican Republic just because they happened to be nearby.

The rest of the world would go apeshit, for starters. Something, however small, needs to happen before anybody will put up with any use of force.
