The idea that someone must be "rabid" if he doesn't hold a middle-ground position is simply moronic. Am I a "rabid" mathie if I think that 2+2=4, and I refuse to budge even a micron toward the 2+2=5 camp?

Arguing that Trek has "some advantages" is like saying that a Roman short-sword has some advantages over a modern bayonet. You know, technically, it does. But that doesn't mean that a Roman foot-soldier will take a modern foot-soldier, or that a Roman army would take a modern army.
