They found that patients with oral cancer containing a strain of the human papilloma virus (HPV) known as HPV16 were three times more likely to report having had oral sex than those without the virus strain.
"The researchers think both cunnilingus and fellatio can infect people's mouths," the magazine added.
Raphael Viscidi, a virologist who worked on the research, believes the findings substantiate the link between HPV and oral cancer.
"This is a major study in terms of size," he said. "I think this will convince people."
High consumptions of alcohol and cigarettes are estimated to cause 75-90 percent of all cases of oral cancer. The combination of tobacco smoke and alcohol are thought to produce high levels of cancer causing agents.
Scientists are currently working on vaccines to prevent cervical cancer, which is more common, but they might also be effective against oral cancer.
"It is thought the vaccines would prevent oral infections as well," the magazine added.
Ummm...yeah, I hate to say this but I think the risk is probably worth it.
Someone might want to check just to be sure that this isn't some elaborate scheme by the Catholic Church to curtail our sex lives...

Yes there was: receiving a blow job was good for the chick, because swallowing the semen helped prevent breast cancer. So, this is to say that if you give oral sex, you probably ought not be drinking alcohol or smoking tobacco at the same time.
That, or you ought to give up puffing tobacco and slurping alcohol and just participate in puffing penises or slurping pussies, since the risk of cancer is much lower.
Umm...I think the point of the article was that if you have oral sex with somebody infected with human papilloma virus (HPV) you're more likely to get mouth cancer, which isn't really all that surprising since HPV is thought to cause many cases of cervical cancer. It's not that just plain having oral sex is going to give you cancer.
(Though I am sure the fundies who love taking everything out of context will see it exactly that way.)
