-: Coventry City Ruins, Coventry :-

The Legion's heavy infantry was famous across the southern Galaxy-
"They carry biological weapons at the Century level!" whispered some.
"Their general infantry wear light power-armor!" whispered others.

The Legion was the bogeyman for the rulers of the pirate fiefdoms surrounding the Commonwealth, and some of the rumors were even true. There was one thing all could agree on- The Legion was a deadly force in city fighting.

Now, advancing into the smashed, twice-bombed remnants of Coventry City, the Legionnaires of the 4th Coventry Brigadiers, the 3rd Coventry Heavy Foot, the 7th Coventry Grenadiers, and the 5th Coventry Heavy Foot began the assault.

Over the cracked, smoking ground came the cavalry Centuries, jumping 50 meters into the air in a cloud of decoys, then advancing at a powered run. The SAMs and ack-ack which lashed out cut many down, but most shots went wild- ARMs had killed most of the sensors that the Serenite bombardment had missed.

The Commonwealth cavalry units jumped from street to street, dropping satchel-charges on tanks and then blasting away, spraying foxholes with shrapnel and then moving on. Hard targets were painted with markerlights, and then blasted by the Shrike gunships which jumped up from behind cover on their 'jets and unleashed storms of AP rockets and HEAT missiles. The surviving Krytos soldiers were disoriented and demoralized, their chain of command disrupted, their sensors bulloxed and failing by the ECM.

The initial shock-attack faded, and the black-armored, faceless forms of Legionnaires filled the city, armored boots stomping across the smoking, still-hot ground. The initial bombardment had turned the city into a kill-zone, and now, the Legions would clean up. Reflexes honed to a razor edge by their internal combat-drug glands, unified and guided by the command-net implants, and pushed to succeed by ther New Bushido conditioning, the Commonwealth soldiers worked with machinelike efficiency, destroying hard-points and taking bunkers in brief, bloody firefights.

:::::::Coventry space battle:::::::

The KSN armada did it's best to mimic the tactics of the SKS fleet, using hyperdrives to make tactical microjumps to recharge shields and fusion cannons. The KSN outgunned the fast response fleet in terms of heavy ships, and they knew it, trying to use their superior numers and firepower to bring down the SKS fleet in a brutal slugging match. On the outskirts of the system, the SKS battleship Typhon was facing off against four cruisers and seven patrol destroyers. The cruisers used their heavy guns to open holes in the vessels shields, and the fast destroyers moved in to exploit them. several cruisers and destroyers had fallen to the SKS forces, and two dreadnaughts had been disabled, but the fleet pressed on, firing every weapon they had. Fighters and fast destroyers moved about thrrough the SKS fleet, drawing their fire while the heavy ships pounded them.

::::::::Coventry city::::::::

The Commonwealth troops were breaking through the lines, but they were paying a heavy price for it. The heavily entreched marines were cutting them down in droves.

-: Coventry City :-

The Krytosian defenses finally crumbled. The initial nuclear bombardment had killed most of them- by clustering in the ruined city, they had broken the first rules of modern warfare and opened themselves up to WMD attack.

Now, their tattered lines were failing. The initial waves had been cut down by the entrenched Marines, but in firing, they had revealed their positions. Bunkerbusters turned the remaining Krytosian strong-points into tangled hells of charred flesh and twisted limbs.

The Krytosian defense of Coventry City failed.

::::::Coventry city::::::::

The soldiers of the KIMC tried and failed to hold their ground. Some surrendered, but others, having been told of the terrible things the commonwealth does to it's prisoners, fought to the last man, or ran and tried to hide among the ruins.

(OOC: a little roumor i started amongst my troops. anyone who hasn't already fought with the commonwealth army thinks they torture and kill their prisoners. An effective motivation tool ,no?)

::::::Coventry space battle:::::

Hit and run tactics were beginning to take their toll on the SKS fleet. Fusion cannons, particle beams and mass drivers ripped through their ships hulls.

Having smashed most of the organized resistance, the Commonwealth troops faded back into the jungles and spread out, operating under Enemy Space Superiority protocols. Until the Krytosian battlewagons were out of orbit, they would remain hidden.

Indashani Space, Velis System
Velis 4, Maliss Space Station

The Velis system served as the primary gateway between the Indashani republic and the various smaller nations that resided in the local area. It was the belief of the republic that under most circumstances military annexation of her lesser neighbors was not only rude but against the best interests of the republic. Invasions were expensive and resistance would likely result in troops being tied down garrisoning these occupied worlds for years if not decades. The republic preferred to offer assistance to various nations, slowly but surely developing ties with those nations that were bold enough to see the opportunity trade with a larger power provided. This policy had been mostly successful over the year, and had by now become the de facto policy of the Indashani.

The policy was not perfect however, and while the republic would not go out of its way to trample upon the rights and privileges of individual nations, it did reserve the right to intervene in matters that it felt directly affected it. This clause had been invoked only a handful of times in the last one hundred years, but the fact that it existed at all was a source of tension for some of the more moderate and perhaps paranoid small powers around the republic. The diplomatic picture was rosy for the most part, although problems did occasional arise. Currently, the republic was dealing with one of those regional flare ups. The trick was always sitting down and putting up with two squabbling powers which together could be swept away by the republic with minimal effort. Currently, the sole reason why the republic was involved at all in this particular squabble was due to the belief that one nation was being supplied by an external force. There was nothing sinister about the prospect; nations would sell some of their weapons to anyone that could afford them. However, the republic always kept a keen eye on stability and having one nation fall to another, could under some circumstances lead to a domino effect. It was something that Indashani primes with the talent of far sight had considered and agreed upon.

Of course, far sight itself was far from a guarantee. The prime in question had only suggested that republican intervention in this war would be in the interest of the Indashani and so the Indashani had embedded them in the political process. All it would take would be one Indashani task force orbiting the home world of both the belligerent nations to bring a quick and bloodless end to the conflict. However, such a display of military might over an indirect threat to the republic was difficult to fathom. Was it possible? There was no doubt that it was within the capabilities of the republic. The problem was that such overt methods were not what the Indashani preferred, and an escalation of that magnitude would do more harm than good to the relations between the Indashani and the non-aligned powers that surrounded it. In the end, a decision was made to make the push on the ground. Wars were not battles in deep space, but they were conflicts that revolved around objectives. The republic had approached the losing side and made its offer, and then settled on waiting. At first, the nation did not wish to pay the price of Indashani involvement but as the war grew progressively worse they accepted the offer. It had been little enough to ask, and entirely as the prime had foreseen.

Of course, now that the Indashani offer had been accepted all that was left was to carry things out. Since the offer had been the first and final offer given and it was expected that it would eventually be accepted, all the necessary pieces were in place. All that remained was too coordinate with the losing side as to how to best get the unit’s planet side. Once there, the Indashani units would fend for themselves even though they would be operating in an environment dissimilar to what they had been originally designed to perform under. Nonetheless, the units should be capable enough and flexible enough to deal with the threats presented to them. Their partner power, the very nation the units had been tasked with assisting had graciously provided intensive intelligence on the targets and their current dispositions. The hostile military simply did not have anything that could directly go toe to toe with the forces arraigned against it, although there were enough weapons to project a significant threat. Furthermore, the units could not count on orbital support. Thankfully, the nations in question did not possess truly capable or vast space navies. If they did, the entire operation would prove to be difficult if not impossible.

It took roughly twelve hours to coordinate with their momentary allies as to what would be the best approach to the situation. A day and a half after the Indashani offer was accepted, the plan was sprung. The forces over the target world’s attention drawn away from the planet’s they orbited as the fleet of the losing side feinted in an attempt to reclaim their overrun worlds. In two separate worlds, the hostile fleets moved to engage the ally’s forces as they approached allowing an Indashani transport to appear in the far side of the planet, using its displacement array to drop its cargo in the world before fleeing via hyperdrive. The third world did not have an orbital presence, and thus the Indashani transport ship dropped its single passenger on the planet side before casually moving away.

Amasu Space, Ykath System
Ykath 3, Planet Side
– ASU 127 Tag, you are it

My arrival on the planet was exactly as expected, the displacement arrays of my chosen transport ship putting me exactly on target with a deviation of only 17 millimeters. My anti-grav systems are at full capacity and after devoting a fraction of a second to do an internal system check I am pleased to discover that all my systems are in the green. I slowly accelerate towards my target area, my noise cancellation hardware quieting the “hum” of my drive system as I accelerate. My internal displacer array is activated, two of my sensor drones displaced to their relevant locations. The Amasu intelligence briefing had been thorough as this world was theirs, but I wanted to double check that their data had been accurate in placing the staging areas of the enemy, which were my primary targets. My sensor drones were not as capable as those found in naval ships, but they were extremely capable for their task. They incorporated dozens of stealth features into their designs making them among the most capable constructs ever devised by republican R&D. The likelihood that they would be detected by the sensors of the enemy was slim.

It took a bit of time to reposition myself although without the fear of orbital eyes picking me up at the moment, I did not feel a need to bring my full capabilities to play. Furthermore, I was not alone in this planet my sensors distinctly aware of my brothers upon the battlefield. The task force was led by the VHAU Aggressive Negotiations, which was tasked with the nullification of all landing zones in its target area. It was also tasked with engaging of orbital targets through the use of its displacer based orbital denial munitions; In essence, a heavy warhead generally found on naval ship-killer drones. Escorting the Aggressive Negotiations were the HAU’s Diplomacy is Dead and Peace of the Gun. Finally, the task force was rounded out by my brother unit the ASU Death and Taxes and myself. I had devoted thirty seven percent of my processing power while in transit to ascertain what the threat that the hostile forces presented was. The end result was heartening, as there was a 94.5 percent probability that the task force would manage to complete their objectives without loss of a single unit. The probability rate dropped to 89.3 percent when the fleet returned and the task force had to deal with the possibility of orbital bombardment. The probability then dropped to 75.8 percent if the information granted to us by the Amasu turned out to be utterly unreliable. Those were more than acceptable odds.

By the time I had arrived at my chosen spot, my drones had been sending me information via secure communications by well over five minutes. The task force was in position, thoughts carried from one member of the unit to the other as they prepared to perform that which they had come here to do. My thirty centimeter kinetic cannons were released from their usual hiding place within me and deployed their bores targeted on the proper bearings. I would be unable to move while deploying the kinetic cannons, my anti-grav field reinforced in order to handle the recoil involved from firing the cannons. However, the Kinetic cannons were not the only weapon available at my disposal; my vertical launch missile system preparing to launch a lethal salvo. It took five an a half seconds to make the proper missile selection, the saturation area chosen being a three kilometer long and one kilometer and seven hundred and fifty meter wide corridor of death.

The task force struck as one, and even as my kinetic cannon salvo began I was aware of my twin and others carrying out their missions as they sought to fulfill their objectives. Each of my thirty centimeter cannons was capable of a sustained rate of fire of one round every second; I fired for five seconds sending twenty 30cm shells towards their target 126 kilometers distant. As the 30cm cannons fired, my VLMS system unleashed twenty area denial missiles, each composed of a wide variety of sub-munitions. I did not fire my primary weapon, a 200cm proton particle cannon, deciding that I would use it only if it was truly necessary. The moment my primary salvo was finished, eight seconds after it began my anti-grav system began to carry me away from my present location. Aware that counter-battery fire was something that could not be taken for granted, if anything at all survived.

I was on the move when my salvo reached its target, my sensor drone used its plethora of sensors to accurately describe to me the effect my attacks. The enemy staging area was adequately defended for any threats it had encountered until now. As the lead 30cm shells arrived they exploded, releasing groups of jammers and counter-measures designed to disable the coordination and fire control capability of the fixed defenses. Defensive lasers began to fire upwards, their radar and sensor systems jammed but still capable of tracking some of the incoming shells. It was for this very reason, that Indashani artillery shells were sheathed in a layer of superconductive armor, a few shells were hit but fewer still were actually destroyed. As the cannons began to arrive on their targets, explosions rocked the compound. The shells quite capable of destroying the humanoid infantry as well as their armored vehicles and anything else that managed to be in the shells direct area of effect. Finally, the missiles arrived each behemoth being roughly ten meters tall and carrying within a wide variety of sub-munitions. Twenty missiles split apart in the air, well before the relatively short ranged and heavily jammed defensive lasers of the enemy could engage them. Where there had been twenty missiles, there were now thousands of sub-munitions some being fragmentation bombs designed to send hundreds if not thousand of crystallized carbon shards, each far stronger than diamond and sharpened to a scalpel’s edge. Others were dual purpose munitions, designed to be a threat both to infantry and light armor. The final munitions were far larger, each the size of a football and holding within the containment system for a few miligrams of anti-matter.

When the sub-munitions arrived, it was as if a piece of hell itself had been transplanted upon the face of the planet, thousands of individual explosions rocking the target area for a handful of seconds. When the smoke cleared, the target area had been sanitized, the sensor drone hinting at a picture of absolute devastation. The task force did not consider the amount of lives they had claimed, and no time was wasted in trying to ascertain if there were any survivors. Each unit was tasked with its mission and it concentrated on its part, working in a manner that was as professional as it was amoral. With my primary mission successful, I move on to my secondary mission. My drones spreading out and repositioning themselves in order to provide me with a better look of the battlefield; I am aware that with our first strikes carried out surprise was no longer an issue. Nonetheless, it did not matter. The enemy did not have the strength to stop us until their ships were in orbit. When that happened, the task force would be prepared.

Indas Times

Ceasefire in Amasu and Kaveth conflict reached, “large scale peace efforts” begun

The conflict between the Amasu and Kaveth has apparently come to a stand still after well over a year of seemingly constant conflict. The ceasefire between the two local nations has caused quite a stir in the immediate area, as it was believed that the Kaveth had taken the upper hand of the conflict roughly two months ago when their forces occupied three major worlds of the Amasu. Rumors abound that the Amasu managed to counter-attack the Kaveth forces in these worlds, and through their liberation force the Kaveth into the negotiating table. The republic is believed to be paying particularly close attention to the negotiations between the two nations. The Indashani ambassador to the Amasu Edja Naris was quoted as saying “the republic is thrilled with the ceasefire that has brought sanity to a needless war. It is the hope of the republic that both nations will come to terms that will finally end the conflict without need for more bloodshed.”

Naval expansion underway

The republican navy is expanding; the shipyards in the Asaya system are at full capacity as various new naval vessels have begun to being built. The sixth fleet which is based on Asaya 3 seems to be the likely recipient of the new warships. The expansion of the Navy appears to indicate that the republic is preparing to increase its role in galactic affairs. The sixth fleet has often being called the “diplomatic fleet” due to its detached nature from protecting any sector of republican space appears to be in the process of being reinforced. The ships being built are one Acheron class Battleship, one Void class drone carrier, two new designs which have been preliminary called “fast cruisers”, ten Seraph class frigates, ten Shadow class heavy frigates and five Hunter class destroyers; certainly a potent task force to be added to the sixth fleet; but not indicative that the republic is currently preparing for an impending conflict.

Avalon Prime, somewhere in Datasphere

One of Jocelyn Gladstones mind-copies (Her 'real-space' body currently discussing a report about the status of the construction of another floating city, another doing some historical research) was relaxing on a divan at a beach, the pure green waves braking several meters away on it.
Taking another sip of her cocktail, she adressed the two other people currently present. "So, Pavel," she adressed the Fleet President basking beside her in the sun. "They are still fighting?"
"Yes, it seems so. Though our projections suggest they'll be finished soon. Whoever is still standing then..."
"Sucha waste of resources..." she sighed. "But it is safe to assume we're currently safe. Relatively speaking. I'll lower the alert status to Omega-Green."
"Still gives us a sufficient level of security..."
She turned towards the other man present. "Hazmarat, did you have any new information about the telepathic intruders?"
"Some limited. I've been in touch with the Observation Directorate, and there seems to be a new star nation making itself known. We are not sure, but it is a bit too much a coincidence that they appear on the galactic stage when at the same time someone is trying to check us out."
"Hm," Gladstone took another sip from the, virtual, cocktail. "Send out a flock of recon drones in the galactic core direction. Maybe we'll find someone..."

-- Deneb Shipyards, two weeks ago --

The shipyards seemed busier than usual, as space tugs moved giant construction frameworks around, new ships slipped out of their berths, and old ships were brought in for repairs. But the most noticeable change was that of four giant forms sliding from their berths. The galaxy was changing once again, and the behemoths of old, updated to meet the new, were once again required.

-- Coventry Orbit, the present --

While the (mostly) sudden appearance of several dozen CorpSec warships did not come as any surprise to the commanders of the SKS fleet in orbit, it probably wasn't quite what the opposing KSE fleets were expecting. Especially when there were two massive Sonomas leading the task force. Or when said ships appeared to be carrying axial superlasers.

The command vessel of the CorpSec taskforce promptly opened a broadcast hail, demanding that the KSE force stand down to avoid further escalation of the conflict.

The arriving Corpsec task force was quickly hammered with multipule ship killer fusion beams as the third fleet turned away from the battle to engage them.

Unfortunately for the KSE third fleet, the CorpSec task group had just arrived with fully-charged shields. What followed next was... well... good or bad depending on whose side you were on. Over 6000 turbolasers, railguns, and missile batteries opened up at once on the KSE fleet, in what would best be described (from a safe distance) as a stunning array of fireworks.

From here, it would be a matter of attrition.

(OOC: Uh, Darksider... this isn't a pissant taskforce... you can check the OOC thread if you're more interested.)

The Fleet was badly hammered by the barrage.

"Order a retreat. If these bastards want coventry so badly they can have it"

Then, all thre KSN fleets made the jump to hyperspace on a return vector to the nearest KSN starbase.

Bridge, CDFN Viscount

"Primary objective accomplished. Damage report?"

"Six escorts and one Jupiter lost shields and suffered multiple hull breaches, which are contained at the moment. Eight escorts suffered major shield failures and had moderate hull damage. Most other ships suffered minor shield failures but took minor or no hull damage."

"Acceptable. Open a channel to the SKS commander, see how much assistance they will require."

-: Albion City, Southern Coast, Main Continent, Coventry :-

A cheer went up across the city- the local broadcasting station had just come back on the air, reporting victory in the skies above Coventry. Already, large convoys of relief supplies were lifting off from the southern metropolitan areas, bound for the shattered wastelands which were, just days before, the thriving northern coastal provinces of Coventry.

Commonwealth soldiers began searching for wounded, preparing medevac for those in need. Victory had been achieved for the men and women of the Commonwealth Army and the citizen-soldiers of the planet's Brotherhoods. Now, the long process of reconstruction could begin.

Seeking the paths...

Post by Marcao »

Indashani Space, Laaen System
Laaen 3, Silver Tower

The so called silver tower was the unofficial name for one of the highest concentrations of Indashani primes within the republic. The tower kept in constant contact with the president and would do as much as it could in order to advise the institution on what paths laid before the republic and what perils awaited it. Not all primes were the same, but all were precious. At the moment however, there was perhaps no other prime quite like Cassandra Yla. Cassandra had been born with the unusual gift of being able to coordinate multiple minds and incorporate them into herself, it was this gift that allowed her to become the central seer of the tower.

The tower itself was massive, holding within it four thousand of some of the most gifted psychics within the republic. It was most known however, for housing one hundred and one primes whose specialty was that of far sight. The tower was a relatively old construct, and had been built originally with the founding of the republic. In this manner, it incorporated technology from the mother nation and its gestalt devices could even now not be fully replicated. It was an irony to many that the technology of the past could still at times out do the technology of the present. A reminder of how much the Indashani had given up when they had formed their own nation and claimed their own piece of the galaxy.

The request from the president arrived wordlessly and spread to those that needed to know like a ghost seeking its tomb. The tower was generally called upon to assist the decision making process often enough, although as of late the requests had gotten more common and at times far more specific. Everyone here knew that the Republic was trying to move away from isolationism and see if it could find worthy partners in order to help shape the future of the galaxy. The question of course, was the galaxy worth shaping? Furthermore, was there anyone worthy enough and careful enough to warrant an overt alliance.

Cassandra did not waste any time, summoning the members of her orchestra which she would be directing as she and the others sought to give the president the clarity he needed to challenge the future. The silver tower’s personality assisted her in her efforts to do so, and in less than fifteen minutes after she had summoned them they had arrived. It took a further ten minutes for all the members to find their positions and hook themselves to their gestalt units, devices which would amplify their already impressive psychic strength. It was only then, with one hundred pairs of eyes upon her that she took her position at the center of the formation and activated her own gestalt device. As she did so, the minds of those around her dropped any barriers between them allowing her to seek unity with their minds.

Cassandra’s mind blossomed and spread as more and more minds joined hers in a union that was beautiful as it was difficult. Once joined with her, there would be no barriers between members and thus the unions were both personal and intimate. It was what made her place so difficult, for she had to coordinate the temporary fusing of one hundred distinct personalities within her and then guide the final mass of psychic power to do what must be done. It took a mere forty seven seconds for the 100 primes to join Cassandra in their gestalt amplified union. Once this union was down, the final juggernaut’s prowess was almost unfathomable. Cassandra hesitated for only a moment before harnessing that might and seeking flight, leaving her physical body behind. It took her only a fraction of a second to find her perceptions floating far above the planet which held their home.

To Cassandra time and space mingled together in a singular mass that she could poke it and manipulate much like string. Her mental presence aware of the astral and causing a ripple in it as her consciousness spread and sought to answer the questions it seeked. She was aware of the astral as much as she was aware of the existence of magic, the Indashani however did not have the talent to use magic. Their birth nation had not possessed such things, but what they had possessed was both technology and other means to counteract those effects. The past, present and future jumbled together before her and she mentally twisted and rearranged the strands until she could find what she needed. She had no interest in the past, even though it was within the reach of her mind. She could have devoted time to going back centuries if not millennia, back to when the Indashani did not exist and seen the great battles of old as if she were there herself. Nonetheless, as tempting as the past was it was not what she was here to seek.

It took moments, for her to find that which she had sought the thousands upon thousands of glimmering pathways which represented possible futures. Each path was led by a choice unseen, a series of events which would coalesce into a future. Had she had enough time she could have theoretically seen them all, and as such could have chosen the greatest path for the republic. Sadly, it was far more difficult than that and she would only be able to see a fraction of the possible futures that were arrayed before her. A soft sigh escaped her lips, a wish that she had the ability to serve her people in such a manner. In the end, she settled for that which she knew she could do. A path investigated, followed by another and then another. Like a treasure hunter seeking wealth, the psychic mass of power that was led by Cassandra sought a simple treasure. The best path for her nation and people to take…

Sub-basement of the Crystal Palace
Enigma, Star Kingdom of Serenity

Libra was the first to sense the disruption in the balance of the Astral. Someone had just probed into it to divine the future and with great strength, that of dozens of minds linked as one. The others perceived it too, but she was most closely aligned with the cosmic balance. There was no malicious intent behind it, indeed, it seemed to strive for good, but even Libra could not tell now.

That could be reported to others for the good of her Kingdom; for now there were more pressing duties. There was a quiet, hidden war now in the underbelly of the Kingdom. The Triads had moved into the power vacuum formed from the decapitation of the old Zodiac; now they found themselves contested. The ancient Terran magics clashed with the astral arts of the Zodiac and there was no clear winner as of yet.

Police forces, for the most part, stayed out of it: the battle was too far beyond them. Once they had tried to intervene -- unwittingly to assist the Triads in this case -- and had been jumped by some agents sent by the Vatican. No-one had died, but it had been weeks until they came out of their coma even with magical healings. So now they stayed out unless it directly endangered the public. That had happened once; a fight spilled out into a major entertainment district and killed not a few.

The local police had not been pleased, and despite the debacle the last time they got involved, this time they had to act. Heavy armored cars were sent out with SWAT teams and riot police and they surprised both the Triad and Zodiac forces, routing them with sheer firepower (incidentially causing rather severe damage to the district). The limits had been dictated now and the war continued on...

Mid-system, Coventry

The Royal Navy would not be denied, once the Corporate Defense Force had arrived they expected the Krytosian ships to stand and fight a bit longer to get their troops out of there. They did not, choosing to escape to fight another day. Ships dominated space, not troops. But the RN had tasted blood and wanted decisive action and sounded general pursuit.

The remains of the two fast fleet squadrons consolidated and hyperfolded on the last known track of the KSN armada...

The Triad Head also felt the ripple. Telepaths, trying by brute force to accomplish what they could not otherwise do. Their powers were limited to the joining of minds, and they could not typically feel and interpret the flow of fate. But by this approach, they could see what they might need, but they also revealed themselves to everyone with the ability to listen. These Indashani might require... further study.

Meanwhile, in the SKS, the shadow war went on. The remnants of the Zodiac, though beheaded, fought with a vigor that had been unexpected but not unplanned for. Eventually it might be necessary to call a truce, but until then the plan would proceed. Hundreds of youma had been recruited and passed through the 'academy' where they would be taught the dark arts, and hundreds more rested on the waiting lists. The day was coming when the Triad Head would step, or rather stomp, into the light.

The wrinkle of the mercenary still remained. The hunter appointed to the purpose had narrowed his search down to a city on a planet not far from the Five Fangs, but there were still millions of humans to be examined. Nevertheless, it was only a matter of time.

[KSN armada, en route to Rashnok six Naval repair and construction facility]

"How many ships did we lose?"

"Over half the armada has sustained moderate damage and the third fleet was badly hammered. I'd say we lost twenty destroyers and seven cruisers outright, and two of our Dreadnaughts won't be able to fight without repairs and replacement crew."

"How long to make repairs once we reach Rashnok?"

"About two weeks to repair the ships and replace lost crew and.... i'm getting a sensor reading....The SKS forces are attempting to follow us to Rashnok"

"Send a warning message. I want them on full alert once we arrive"
And this is why you don't watch anything produced by Ronald D. Moore after he had his brain surgically removed and replaced with a bag of elephant semen.-Gramzamber, on why Caprica sucks

TSC Space, Isis Border Province
Isis Prime, Orbit

The Shining Path continued her orbit, silently coordinating with her taskforce about a myriad of opportunities which their position provided them. The passive sensors of the task force were gleefully collecting every bit of data that the system offered to them, from projections of the population size below them, to the amount of heavy industry and dozens of other nuances. The information they collected gave the task force something to do while the ambassador and her escorts were shown around. The orbital defenses had been given a great deal of attention, and although the task force did not use active sensors the AI in charge of the Shining Path was confident that it had a good idea of its capabilities.

As the information was analyzed and various models were run through complex simulations, the information was sent via secured communications back towards naval headquarters. All that the task force could do now was wait and see what developed on the planet side, until then however the various ships would content themselves in trying to gather as much information as possible about the world they orbited and the system as a whole.

Indashani Space, Indas System
Indas 3, Government Headquarters

the predictions and suggestions from the Silver tower arrived to the government headquarters in their usual secure method, the information immediately sent to analysis for overview. The silver tower did not deal in absolutes, it dealt in probabilities and while those probabilities tended to be high they should never be taken as fact. The information was considered and thoroughly analyzed, the predictions and suggestions that were the most important and relevant passed along further down the process which would eventually lead to the president himself.

The information that did not seem to be as important or as certain was passed along down another path, examined further to see if it would be implemented. There were thousands of paths all leading towards the future, to ask those in the silver tower to find the best one was all but impossible. However, over the years those within the silver tower had learned how to focus on certain signs and strategies. By now, the entire process was down to as close to a science as could be. The information that would eventually reach the president would be crucial, the conflict points in which a prosperous and safe future hinged. It had worked this way for centuries, and the Republic still existed. There was little doubt among those that knew of the silver tower and worked with its insights that the process worked. Nonetheless, it was not fool proof their history proved that.

No Surrender, No Retreat

TSC Space, Desjardins System
Desjardins, Orbit

In the bridge of the PRC flagship, realization dawned quickly on the minds of the admiral as well as his staff. The situation about them was nearly impossible to overcome, and their stalling for time in the hopes that Dunlap forces would arrive in time proved to be a failure. As the shots began to be fired, a sharp intake of breath was followed by a soft exhalation. The admiral’s mind considering a single question: how did it come to this?

There was no time to consider any thoughts; however, the inhibitors which their cursed enemies were using prevented the fleet from jumping to safety and putting this tactical nightmare behind them. It was fight or surrender, since flight was no longer an option and as his fleet began to take fire icy resolve flooded his veins. He would not go down without a fight. There were not a great deal of choices for the fleet to take, and that it would die or be maimed was not a question. It was all about how much pain they would inflict upon their enemies as they suffered in turn. Misery loved company, and he was about to prove that right.

The fleet reeled behind the combined firepower of the TSC and entente fleet, orders carried out from the flagship acknowledged and carried out. The Kzin had already proven that their thrice-damned point defense was impressive to say the least, and as such the influx of missiles ceased. It was pointless to try and batter such an impressive shield, and thus the weight of fire that had been concentrating on the Kzin ships switched to another. The fire plan was simple, all the missiles that had been aimed towards the Kzin were aimed towards the nearest TSC shipyard. Hundreds of missiles became thousands as they left their tubes, guided terminally from within their launching ships rather than allow the missiles to use their internal sensors. The electronic countermeasures employed by all fleets were potent, and at the ranges involved was capable of affecting nearly any missile launched.

The PRC was in a disadvantage, but it was not defeated not yet. Like a wounded predator, PRC ships fought back seeking to move as close as possible to their sisters for mutual protection. It was an imperfect solution, for the shields of the fleet which were redirecting energy had a tendency to explode outwards once breached. This fact prevented PRC ships from getting as close as they could have. The shields glowed brilliantly as their shields struggled to keep back massive amounts of energies at bay, the fleet glowing like dozens of rainbows etched on the skies over Desjardins.

PRC ships were wounded or killed with every passing moment, but the fire control shifted once suitable amounts of missiles had been sent towards the TSC shipyards. The weight of fire should be enough to destroy or severely cripple the yards, but nothing was certain anymore…nothing but pain and death.
It was true that the Kzin single ship was an impressive design; it was large, tough and sturdy. It also was able to be easily tracked by capital ship grade energy weapons and the side of the fleet which faced the incoming horde, took advantage of this. Capital grade energy weapons fired at single ships, fully intent on vaporizing or at the very least wounding the corvette sized “fighters”. PRC missiles began to explode around the incoming strike fighter hordes, an inelegant solution to the mass of Kzin but one born of desperation.

Three Cornerian Dreadnoughts dared to approach the Republic, their missile tubes in constant fire as the ships tried to force the massive ship into a slugging match. It was a fool hardy, the Republic’s point defense was excellent and its shields and armor were capable of holding the ships back at bay while her massive weapons lashed out against weakened shields and then rent huge holes into their infrastructure. The PRC did not believe in heavily armoring their ships, and in this situation they began to suffer for that philosophy. Nonetheless, they fought on.

The three Cornerian dreadnoughts that had engaged the Republic were defeated; one destroyed outright its shields exploding outwards before eight of the Republic’s massive particle beams penetrated her hull. Her crew died painlessly, and although PRC energy cores were extremely stable there were times when even that were not enough. The dreadnought exploded outwards in a massive fireball, there were no survivors. Her sisters were luckier; both were reduced to atmosphere venting hulks, their crews reduced to the dead and dying. Nonetheless, the struggle for survival continued life pods launching from various sectors as those found in the stricken ships sought to escape.

In the flagship, the admiral’s face was grim and determined as his fleet died. There was nowhere to go, his mind screamed at him to surrender and end this slaughter but he was an officer to the Republic…and he refused to dishonor himself or his nation by such an act. His attention was drawn to his display, a series of red flashing symbols indicating the death of another of his precious ships. The name in one particular attracted his attention, he knew the captain well they had gone to the naval academy together. His ship shook, the symbol fading from the grid with a finality that brought him near tears.

The PRC fought as if possessed, each ship doing all it could to stem the tide of battle. But it was over, the fleet’s losses had begun to erode its firepower the initial flood of missiles slowing to a river, then a lake, then a stream and now a trickle of missiles aimed to decapitating the escort forces of the TSC. Fully two third of the fleet was now either destroyed or knocked out of action, space flooded with debris, life pods and shuttles as a seemingly never ending stream of distress beacons were ejected into space. The last third of the fleet continued onwards, concentrating their salvos on any target that was weakened or maimed. The outcome of the battle had never been in question, but the PRC fleet had done its duty…

On board the CNV Hathor, weapons officer Leftenant Laeen Murash stared grimly at his weapons display. The PRC fleet was dying, and as much as he disliked the PRC he could not help but feel sadness at the results of the battle. Why had the PRC admiral chosen to fight? Why had he been so foolish? It did not matter, the PRC had chosen to die fighting and it was his duty to help them along to the other side. His mind reminded him that he had lost his wife and unborn child when Sous Admiral’s Marcao’s taskforce had been destroyed. His mind reminded him that his parents and his daughter had been killed when the KSN had bombed Coventry. Nonetheless, New Bushido training did not allow him to totally hate his adversaries. All war was regrettable, and the PRC had its chance to surrender. The PRC had started this war, and the TSC would finish it. His sensor console was trained on the PRC flagship, the state of the ship’s sensors noted. Judging by the color patterns of the ship’s shields, he was aware that the shields would collapse soon and when they did. He would act. It would happen right about…now.

The leftenant took control over one of the Hathor’s FTL missile batteries and loosed three of the large missiles preferred by the TSC, the missiles jumping to hyperspace and attempting to appear inside the target ship. The first missile was a clean miss, the rampant use of ECM on both sides skewing the results. The second missile did better, detonating partly in contact with the flagship’s engines and blowing a good third of them away. The PRC flagship seemed to buckle and twist, when it happened…

The bridge of the PRC flagship was awash with activity, the emotions within ranging from desperation to absolute sadness. All the men and women in the bridge knew that their fleet was dead and that thousands of people they had known were either maimed or killed. Thousands of the Republic’s best and brightest. No one liked losing, but this was far more than a loss this was annihilation. The ship shuddered as the shields finally gave up the fight, energy weapons slamming against the hull of the vessel and scoring multiple wounds. It was near the end, and everyone knew it. Head turned, glancing towards the admiral in hope that he had something to say.

“We have done our duty…” The admiral’s voice was soft, the ship reeling as a hyper missile exploded near the engines and ripped a third of them clean off. The admiral sighed, eyes closing as he spoke. “Signal the TSC fleet it’s…” His eyes snapped open as an unusual sensation manifested across the back of his neck. For a fraction of a second, the air within the bridge twisted slightly as something pushed through the boundaries of space time and appeared partly within. There was no time for realization; the TSC hyper missile exploding a millisecond after it arrived at its chosen destination. The explosion instantly vaporized the bridge crew and ripped the bridge apart, the ship held together but it tumbled in space, its maneuvering thrusters firing out of control as the ship was deprived of its heart.

The flagship tumbled out of alignment with the fleet, tumbling out of control as the engine room now the heart of the ship tried to control its descent. It was of little use however, as various control surfaces and conduits had simply ceased to be as the internal and external damage was taken into account. With the decapitation of the PRC flagship, the rest of the fleet was doomed and were slowly but surely ground down. No ship surrendered, fighting until it was little more than free floating atoms or so crippled, that all the crew could do was escape in life pods and shuttles before remotely activating their scuttling charges. At times, living and wounded crewmen stayed behind, choosing to die with their ships while others escaped. In the end, the fleet ceased to be and all that remained was a literal sea of life pods holding the living, wounded, injured and dying.

The battle over Desjardins had come to an end, all that was left was to pick up the pieces and save whoever could be saved.

notes:

1. the first thing the fleet tried to do was unload a large amount of missiles towards the TSC shipyards. I was told that trying to destroy them was a priority target. Due to this the bulk of the fleet’s fire was aimed towards them throughout the engagement. The shipyards should be either destroyed outright or severely crippled unless a way to protect them from the large amount of missiles was found.

2. The entire fleet concentrated nearly all of its fire in the shipyards, ignoring the Kzin whose point defense they could not break through significantly and the TSC as well as UTR forces. In this manner, loses inflicted on capital ships should be very light if any as the bulk of the ships did not suffer direct targeting. The highest concentration of losses should be upon the Kzin strike craft such as single ships, which attracted defensive fire as they approached. According to the PRC order of battle, their point defense is quite good so attacking strike fighters from any nation should take appropriate casualties.

3. The Kzin point defense is so bad ass that the PRC decided that wasting its missiles against them was pointless. This means that Kzin capital and escort ships were for the most part untouched. However, their single ships were targeted by the energy weapons and a significant amount of capital ship missiles so I expect that single ships and other small craft in the area suffered some pain.

4. PRC fighters were launched, I have no idea how many and thus I am sure you guys will be creative. They probably used their ordanance (if any) on any incoming fighters, and once they had nothing substantial but lasers they probably flew back to try and protect the increasing amounts of life pods in the area.

5. be gentle with the post. I did the best I could. ^_^

6. The post was modified slightly from the original and thus, it may not flow as well as the first one. If any of the readers is lost or confused, please get in contact with me. I will do what I can to clarify what I intended to happen.

-: Desjardins System, CNV Morrigan :-

Andreson's Command-womb was quiet and compotent. This was the environment for which the Commonwealth naval officers were best trained- a straight up fight, a set-peice battle of force against force. New Bushido at it's finest.

The fire-plan continued. The Morrigan's guns would target a single Cornerian Dreadnought, and the rest of the Wall of Battle would fire as one, annihilating the small Cornerian warships one by one. Little counter-fire lashed out at the Commonwealth's vessels- the enemy was focusing on destroying the Kzinti singleship squadrons.

"Admiral, Cornerian vessels are retargetting. Desjardins shipyards reports, enemy vessels painting it for long-range missle launches."

"Fortress Command reports all gun-platforms and PD sattalites slaved to Desjardins Shipyards point defence, Admiral."

Andreson's eyes glazed- his mind was in the command-net, plugged in to the fleet. His response was immediate. He had ordered, at the beginnning of the battle, that the Fleet was to forgo the usage of the Swarmer antimissile Pods until his order came- and the time had come.

"All vessels are to flush their pods in defense of the shipyards."

The waves of Cornerian missiles were truly incredible- even with the fleet as badly damaged as it was. Tens of thousands of missiles made of the first volley.

Arcing away from the serried ranks of Commonwealth warships, clusters of tiny missiles sped out, bursting from their pods and then moving to intercept the Cornerian capship missiles. The first Cornerian missile wave was annihilated almost to the last projectile, the few survivors were picked out of the sky by the shipyard's sattalite constellations and gun-platforms.

The second wave was ragged, only scoring a handful of hits against the shipyard's heavy theatre shielding.

The third was seriously reduced in strength, causing impressive explosions against the fortress-shipyard's heavy shielding.

And then, the PD missile-pods were dry. The Fleet's escorts discarded their empty tubes, while the larger combatants retracted their pods for reloading in the internal bays.

Still, the stream of fire lashed out at the Commonwealth shipyards- but distances were extreme, and the missiles still had to pass through the Commonwealth fleet interposed between Desjardins and the Cornerians.

-CNV Hathor reports, fired up and killed Cornerian command ship, repeat, fired upon and destroyed Cornerian command ship.

The Cornerian fleet began to crumble. With their command ship dead, and most of their Dreadnoughts heavily damaged or destroyed, their own PD network was falling apart. The Cornerian vessels fought as squadrons, then individually- never giving ground. But there was little they could do, now- their offensive punch had been spent on the Desjardins shipyards. The Commonwealth dreadnought and heavy cruiser wall had closed to energy range. The massive guns thundered again and again, sending thick streams of particles into the shields of the Cornerian vessels. Turbolasers rocked in their housings, blowing holes thorugh the poorly armored Cornerian warships.

The fight wound down. Squadrons of strike frigates and destroyers began chewing apart the massive Cornerian Harrington-class command bases, gutting the massive vessels. The Cornerian mobile superheavy laser became a shattered hulk, barely mobile.

Andreson surveyed the battlefield. Reports were coming in from across the Fleet- losses, kills, damage reports.

The CNV Lillith, a Fleet Carrier, had died in the first seconds of the battle to the Cornerian superlaser.
A trio of heavy cruisers had fallen to Cornerian fire in the clean-up operation.
Over 30 escorts, largely strike frigates and destroyers, had been destroyed as well.
Finally, reports were coming in from the Desjardins Shipyards, the Commonwealth's only active Dreadnought shipyard. The missile barrage had been hindered by Desjardin's extensive planetary defenses and satalllite clusters, and by the extreme ranges they had been forced to operate at, but many hits had still been scored. The shipyard's shields had been penetrated a half-dozen times, and one of the two almost-finished Dreadnoughts had been significantly damaged, her aft reactor cluster gutted along with her aft gun decks. the shipyards themselves had taken damage- supply storage bays, raw material hangers, and a crew module had been destroyed. It would be a month's repairs before the shipyard's second slip would be working once more, and another month to repair the damaged Dreadnought.

-: ENDRECORD :-

-: Oh, BTW, the Cornerian superlaser platform is their High Energy Weapons experimental thing, right? the one based off the Harrington design? then NSS Commandship?

"Casualties?" the commander of the Black Pride fleets demanded.

The aide went down the list, "Our higher-end capital ships suffered minimal damage. The battlecruiser Eye-Slash suffered a sensor malfunction and a volley slipped the point-defence, she will require dry-dock for engine repairs. Two cruisers were struck and suffered hull deformation and weapons damage. One will retreat to drydock, while the other can make do with field repairs. About 25 destroyers were lost or damaged beyond repair; an additional 30 must put in to Five Fangs for repairs."

"Singleship losses?"

"Severe. 25% to 30% are out of action, with another 25% suffering significant damage."

"We'll need to reinforce the carrier wings," the commander replied matter-of-factly, "but this was all-in-all a highly successful fight."

The Corporate Sector Defense Force had sent reinforcements to aid the Star Kingdom's fast raiding force, arriving soon enough to save the bulk of the heavy combatants (and not too few light ships) from destruction. They were damaged, but nothing that couldn't be patched up in pursuit. CorpSec's forces would follow the Star Kingdom's ships in, and they were be an overwhelming force. Four capital ships were nothing to scoff at, especially the two enormous Sonomas. In addition, the sole Jupiter-mod planetary assault carrier would join them.

More importantly, they had managed to capture a pair of KSN interdictor vessels that had been knocked out early in battle. In the chaos that followed, the Krytosian forces were unable to tow her home and left her; ion cannon bombardment ensured that the ship would not self destruct. Now those ships were being dragged with the fleet to pin down the KSN armada running towards one of their fleet bases. Three regiments of infantry would traverse in Babylonian Hyperspace with a few escorts to wait until needed -- then they would assault the base itself. The rest would be covered by follow-up forces now staging to Coventry untl they were withdrawn.

And so, in a burst of Cronau radiaton the Entente force dropped out of hyperspace (OOC: SW style) at the edge of the enemy fleet base's interdiction field and opened fire. The Krytosian force had been expecting them, but the warning had not been long and their defensive posture was hurried ...

UTR Naval Command
Luna, Sol System

"Sir, new reports coming in. Task Force 52 reports the Cornerian strike on Desjardins has been repulsed with moderate fighter losses and no signifgant losses in escort ships and only light damage to capital ships."

The Admiral in charge of Luna base studied the incoming message that contained far greater detail then the quick summary his comm officer had given him. Everything looked good. TF 52 was still in full fighting trim.

It looked like they'd be avialable for backing up the combined SKS/CS strike into Krytos space. "Send order to TF 52, they are to contact the combiend fleet on the enclosed frequency and encryption. I want them to get underway immediatly."

Royal House of Dunlap Offensive Fleet

The young Lord Alexander XI of Dunlap had pulled his fleet after home called and said the PRC itself was being crushed. So, they spotted at the allied port of Kappa, part of the once great Gonoese Trade Empire. They turned "north" will soon be at the heart of the PRC. However, what had happened at the "south" they didn't know.
