A rabid bullshitter wrote:Climate change over the next 20 years could result in a global catastrophe costing millions of lives in wars and natural disasters..

A secret report, suppressed by US defence chiefs and obtained by The Observer, warns that major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas as Britain is plunged into a 'Siberian' climate by 2020. Nuclear conflict, mega-droughts, famine and widespread rioting will erupt across the world.
A "secret report" made by the Pentagon on environmental issues (!) was "suppressed" by the government and mysteriously found its way into the hands of the Guardian, warning darkly that climate change will be so rapid, so catastrophic, that European cities would be underwater and Britain's environment would be "Siberian" within 16 years?

It's difficult to read through the entire article, because the overwhelming stench of bullshit makes it difficult to breathe.

Yeah, it was so suppressed it was available on the Pentagon main site and CNN.

I read it, its only a climate projection with a "worst-case-scenario" bent.

I'm sure the makers of "The Day After Tomorrow" will embrace this. :P

Btw, when I said "worth pondering," I just meant imagining that really happening. It seemed a little too fast for my tastes, in terms of the timetable, but I still found it interesting.

I do like the way the Guardian took a report which asked the hypothetical question: "if there was a ridiculously rapid climate shift in the next 15 years, what would happen in terms of geopolitics" and turned it into "major European cities will be sunk beneath rising seas".

I wonder what James Watt would say about this.

I laughed my ass off, this so called 'super-secret report' is nothing more than one of the doomsday scenarios that the Pentagon creates on a regular basis. Remember, its the job of the US military to have a plan, regardless of how absurd or off the wall it is, just in case.
Some of them are available to the public(ones from many years ago), my favorite from the early 50's involved repeling an invasion from Canada after a Soviet led Communist Coup........

Yeah, I saw that one on one of the fringe sights. Could be "interesting" if it turns out to have merit...

 Observer technically (though admittedly, some would say it's a trifling distinction).

That said I'm surprised they printed something this alarmist, especially since it's not an editorial/commentary like 90% of what's cut and pasted around here. Guess they ****ed up.

Ah well, never bother with the Observer anyway.

Weren't they the ones who had the detailed layout of Osama's "secret" hideout in Afghanistan a few years ago? It even detailed the US spec ops teams tactics and path of attack....

Who the Observer? Can't find it on the search engine, but I wouldn't be surprised if something similar was around somewhere (though I highly doubt it would be quite so certain of itself, probably would've been more like overblown conjecture than blatent lies, even the Sun doesn't stoop that low.)

In anycase, even as a Guardian reader I'd say the Observer often seems to me to be more of a dumping ground for stuff that they don't want to print in the weekday edition. Whatever.

Something I didn't get; why would the military suppress an environmental report?

Because they're the military and everything must be kept top secret? Dang, I had this great quote about the military classifying the wheel or something mundane like that if it could, but it suddenly escaped me.

We still planned for those back in the 30s, at least. Complete with strategic bombing of Canadian cities with poison gas.

War Plan Orange I think it was for us :P

Just one of the thousands of contingency plans for the "what if" crowd
"Of course, what would really happen is that in Game 7, with the Red Sox winning 20-0 in the 9th inning, with two outs and two strikes on the last Cubs batter, a previously unseen meteor would strike the earth, instantly and forever wiping out all life on the planet, and forever denying the Red Sox a World Series victory..."

War Plan Crimson was the contingency plan against Canada. War Plan Orange was the plan against Japan.

Ahh, thats the one :D

Same diff, the point being the pentagon probably has plans to repel an invasion from Zeta Reticuli buried somewhere in its files :P
