I use "half" since "one half" sounds fucktarded, though probably correct
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

What's the literal translation of "Ranma Nibun no Ichi"? What does Viz translate it to? :?

I've always heard it as "Ranma One Half" and always pronounced that way.

Ah hell.

Half implies half of a predefined whole (that being 1, 3, 10, anything) whereas one-half implies exactly that: half of one.

More importantly, look at how 3/2 is said: Three halves. 2/2 is two halves, 4/2 is four halves, and so on. 1/2 is thus one half, not half. Half works only with predefined quantities. Half a dozen, for instance, is better than one half a dozen, because we know the quantity in a dozen.

I say Ranma one-half. All my friends always called it Ranma one-half. I always thought it was a dumb name for a show, too, but I expect little else from a genre producing such titles as "Tank police" and "Very-happy-family dragon purple fun-fun show 18!!!

Then you've got a funny way of reading fractions. If you saw the fraction "1/2" would you just say "half" or would you say "one half"? Clearly not the first, because that's not complete, since you aren't saying the numerator.
Clearly not the second either. Mathematically, you say "1/2" like this: "one over two". As this thread proves, some people have been brought up on the shortcut "half", others "one half".

No, it's said "one half" in English. It may well be "one over two" when said in German, but I don't speak German.

We said "half" in the Australian High school and Uni I went to. Though for any other fraction, it was in the form: "three quarter, four sixth". But the proper and formal way of saying a fraction is the number, followed by "over", then the denominator. Thanks for not actually answering his question.

While I don't have a dictionary with me, I'm going to guess that the literal translation of "Nibun no Ichi" is "half ["two-part"] of one".

'two part of one'? Well that kinda descibes all the shapeshifting that goes on, doesn't it? 2 in one?

Still, first time I was introduced to it the friend called it Ranma One-half

Heh, well as I said, I don't have a dictionary on me, so while I know that "ni" means two, I had to guess that "bun" meant something like "part" or "fraction" or some such.

My ex-girlfriend's crazy little Japanese brother called it "Ranma one of two", but he was insane, and could tell you where you were in "Paper Mario" by listening in from the other room.

I looked in one of his Ranma books, and even though it was in Japanese, I could tell it was dumb enough for me not to care how its title was pronounced.
And you may ask yourself, 'Where does that highway go to?'

I was reading the japanese version and the same thought came into my mind that treders ex's brother said. One of Two makes more sense, overall.

But we can definitely rule out just half because that would be Ranma-Han.

What do you call 2/4 (other than "half")?

Two-four..

At least in music you do.. >_>

And I've heard it both half and one-half, and I must say that I prefer the sound of one half. -shrugs-

["two-part"] of one".

Actually, that is the literal translation: Two under/of One, or something similar.

You you are completely and totally anal when people say something wrong and jump up their asses for it, but you don't apply that standard to yourself? Huh. Nice hypocrisy there.

I think Ranma One-Half has a nice symmetry to it, both words having two syllables and all.
Don't hate; appreciate!
