History? I love history! First, something happens, then, something else happens! It's so sequential!! Thank you first guy, for writing things down!

I thought that Dimmu Borgir's music was as much based in keyboards as in their guitar play.Embracer Of Darkness wrote:Currently, I'd say Dimmu Borgir. Tomorrow, I could say anything from Aeturnus to Zyklon.
As for my decision - I'm still undecided. I was thinking about Judas Priest (for sheer influence), though... but I have IIRC only heard a small portion of their overall work. In general, I'm actually not too fond of "greatest ever" polls... there's so many candidates that it is impossible to pick one, though it is obvious that some are better than others.

There are so many to choose from. I could be a fanboy and say my favorite band has/ had the greatest guitarists in the world, but the Eagles were always more about making their singing sound great rather than their guitar playing; They have always taken great pains to make themselves sound as good in concert as they do in the studio. And they made a HUGE MISTAKE in kickin Don Felder out last year...he was better than Walsh, IMO.
That being said, the greatest guitar based band of all time is Lynrd Skynyrd. They also had one of the greatest collections of musical talent anywhere. Their `70s line up was collection of world class musicians: Ronnie van Zant on vocals (died 1977); Bob Burns and then later Artimus Pyle on drums;
Allen Collns, Guitar (d. 1990);
Ed King who quit in 1975, later replaced by Steve Gaines on guitar(died 1977);
Gary Rossington, Guitar; Leon Wilkenson, bass (d.2001);
anfd Billy Powell, keyboards.
The band reunited in 1987, and conducted concert tours across the nation, and still records. Afew of the original members that survived the plane crash in 1977 quit or died since then, with only Powell and Rossington the only two original members still in the band.
Go listen to the following songs to discover why they were so great:
Freebird
Saturday Night Special
Simple Man
That Smell
The Ballad of Curtis Lowe
Tuesday`s Gone
On the Hunt (this one`s kinda hard to find, but a kick ass song)
Sweet Home Alabama
Working For MCA
I Ain`t the One
Swamp Music
I think that`s enough.

The term "Guitar-based band" is ambiguous, too. We've had everything from Dimmu Borgir to the Beatles listed here, and we never even talked about side projects. The styles of guitar play between players like Tom Morello and Joe Satriani are in totally different worlds. But if I had to go by category, I'd go like this, bands only:
Guitar effects innovation: Tom Morello (RATM)
Best rock solos: Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen)
Best rock riffs: Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)
Best rock arrangement: Kirk Hammet, James Hetfield (Metallica)
Best pop solos: Eric Clapton (Cream, Yardbirds, others)
Best pop riffs: Dave Matthews (DMB)
Best metal riffs: I forget the guy's name
(Mushroomhead)
Best metal solos: N/A![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)
Best jazz solos: Django Reinhardt (Multiple bands)
Best blues solos: Stevie Ray Vaughan (multiple bands)
Best blues riffs: Jimi Hendrix (JH Experience)
Best blues arrangement: BB King
Fin.

BTW - as for best metal solos, the most amazing I have heard this side of Malmsteen is the guitar duel in Megadeth' s Hangar 18.

After watching John Petrucci's Rock Discipline, the man has 100% of my guitar restecp. It's not that he's blindingly quick like Malmstein or tricky as Satch but just so well rounded in rock guitar. Can anyone tell me whether all the riffs he plays in that are from LTE or something (I don't have any of their albums)? I've never heard any of them on a DT album.

Actually that's a bit of a simplification, Clapton had affairs with Paul and George's wives while they were married, did John Lennon's first wife after she had broken up with Lennon, and even had a brief fling with barbra bach (ringo's wife)

1) I'm 30 years old...
2) Minor Threat are an American punk band from the early 80s (When Black Flag were around) Ian Mackaye the lead singer went on to form Fugazi and was the co-founder of dischord records
