I pet my cat when I see him, except when he's sleeping, and I mean really sleeping, when he's even too tired to purr.
Don't hate; appreciate!

I sometimes give my cats petting automatically, but since i have 4 it would take a lot of time up if it was unnavoidable. Since i've come hoe for the weekend they're getting a lot of extrra attention though.

I'm more a dog person...
My cat s irritating most of the time, though I pet him when I feel like it. Though he's 14 now, so I might be looking for a new pet in the near(er) future...

i kinda miss having a cat. . . .they're so much easier to maintain than dogs are. and actually are more intelligent, imo.

I don't know. Guess it depends.

Both my dog and cat had the whole irresistable urge to pet thing everytime I went by. The difference being, my dog was better at picking up my emotional state. Whereas my cat will just come over any ol' time, regardless of what I'm trying to do (like reading, when he plops himself on my paper), my dog generally left me to my own devices, and was content just being in the same general area.

Unless I was feeling really down, or had something bad happen to me that day. Then he'd come by and pluck his head in my lap, and stay there. It would make me feel a lot better. My cat, on the other hand, will usually leave when he feels like it.

So, both are cute, and I love 'em to death, but my dog was just better as a companion for me.

That's why I really, really miss him...

ah. in my case, i had a rottweiler that was keen to have, but, she had this tendency of leaning up against your leg. the moment you walked away, she'd fall over. . . . .not exactly good for doggy intelligence. still miss her though.

My dog is great. Pet her everytime I walk by because she's so damn cute. When she sharks out (I.E. goes belly up) the urge to raspberry her is irresistable.

It's not unusual. My dogs are highly petable and must be petted when I pass them..

StarKitty and TevKitty have the EyeBeams of Cuteness, which compell you to pet them whenever you walk by.

Then they jump in your lap and curl up, leaving you unable to do anythig but pet them.

Yea, I do that, I've got 4 to choose from though, so even if one's pissed me off by eating my take-away or something, there's always another one to make a fuss of.
I think I heard somewhere that petting your pets is a way of stress relief.
