CNN wrote:Former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide said Monday he was forced to leave Haiti in a "coup d'etat" by the United States.
"I was told that to avoid bloodshed I'd better leave," he said in an interview on CNN.
Earlier, the Bush administration vigorously denied that Aristide was kidnapped by U.S. troops, which is what two U.S. members of Congress said the deposed Haitian president told them in telephone calls.
"That's nonsense," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said. "I've seen some of the reports [and they] do nothing to help the Haitians move forward to a better, more prosperous future."

I see no reason for us to have meddled there. If we were going to, we'd already have beefed up the embassy security and such.
So I call bullshit.

Halliburtan can get more rebuilding contracts, paid for by the American People. Duh.Howedar wrote:I see no reason for us to have meddled there.
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

Why the hell would we be rebuilding Hati? And what the hell would we be rebuilding, corrugated tin shanty towns? The US has no sane reason at all to be messing with Hati.BlkbrryTheGreat wrote:Halliburtan can get more rebuilding contracts, paid for by the American People. The very presence of 2,200 US Marines in a foreign country means meddling. So any saying "no" to this story based on "what do we have to gain" is out from the very start.
Personally, I doubt it, but I'm not sure.

Meddling in this case would be before the rebellion started, since Aristide claims a coup.
Although I see what you're saying and you're techincally correct.

I don't give a damn why or hoe he got kicked from one shithole to another, though I really doubt the US or anyone else put any effort into doing it.

During an interview with CNN, Aristide said the resignation letter reported by the media wasn't the one he wrote, that "it is missing a sentence". A week ago, he was begging the international community to send forces to restore law and order. Those words don't sound like they came from a man who wanted to leave.

True, but he was about to die. True, but the Marines were landed at the embassy once the rebels began threatening the capital. Tthere's never been anything about the doing any thing but securing the embassy in case some looters get ambitious. That's a bit different than them being in country and involved with the rebelion one way or the other.Vympel wrote:The very presence of 2,200 US Marines in a foreign country means meddling. The only real thing the US has to gain from this is to play nicely with our friends instead of pissing them off, for a change. Not that I'm against pissing them off.
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

No it doesn't. We've sent troops to places where we've had nothing to gain a couple times for the last decade. The very presence of 2,200 US Marines in a foreign country means meddling. So any saying "no" to this story based on "what do we have to gain" is out from the very start.
