His death was kinda funny. Musta sucked to go through, but as an observer I am amused.

Something strange happened here, and the guy could have had an allergic reaction to the spider bite, but this story's giving off the unmistakeable aroma of Mierdo del Torro as far as I'm concerned.
I would expect them to scavenge the corpse after their food ran out.

I can't speak for the spiders, but geckos don't scavenge.

So a gecko will starve rather than eat dead flesh?

Although I suppose it doesn't matter because I expect the geckos would be feasting on spiders.

Right, which is why I'm not inclined to believe this story much either. And a gecko can survive for months loose in a house. Into the crawlspaces and vent shafts it goes. Do you have any idea how many wild bugs there are to be had in even the most compulsive neat freak's house? The idea that a gecko would be hungry enough to snack on a giant dead mammal is so stupid it makes me laugh, especially when the entire story revolves around how buggy this guy's house was.

Given that the story appeared in the Sun and the only article in German I found was in Krone, an Austrian magazine of equal reputation, I seriously doubt the story. This happened in Germany, but German papers don't mention it? Please.

Why would you want to keep anything that can kill you?

Dogs and cats make great pets. They are affectionate and loyal (yes even cats), they are smart enough to recognize you as the master and provider, and smart enough to have individual personalities that make them interesting company.

Deadly creatures, on the other hand, that lack much brainpower, and operate mostly on instinct, and which are therefore not smart enough to regard you as anything other than potential prey, or a potential threat, are something I can't unserstand why anyone would want to keep around.
Well, dogs above a certain size can kill you, too :)

Our Dobermann/Great Dane dog could kill me, if he so desired. Luckily, he's too lazy to actually move.... :D

Just to be fair mike, most species of spider cant kill you. Only a few rare species of south american tarantula can kill you... and most people have pet tarantulas, and not black widows...

A few more good pet ideas.
Savannah monitor... can be dog tame if you do it right/get a good individual

I read this in the Sun the other day when I was bored behind the bar.
Apart from the fact that spiders scare the fecking shite out of me, I think it would've been kinda interesting to see how long the lizards and aracnids could have survived before having to turn on each other or something, I mean, they'd already lived off him for 2 weeks.

Actually, Mike, that species of tarantula isn't all that bad an idea if spiders don't just freak you out to begin with. That thing bites you, you get a rash around the bite. That's it. *Shrug* They hunt their prey through brute strength. Its the little webless ones that you have to worry about. They depend on their poison and as such its usually more deadly.

Myself, I used to keep snakes. Nothing like a nice tame hognose snake draped over your shoulder (again, provided you can stand them).

Sorry, but I'm going to stick with puppies. No woman ever stopped a man in the park to comment on how cute his tarantula was.

Now, I really like spiders. I had a pet tarantula when I was younger. When I volunteer at the local nature center, I am the only person who will actually pick up the Mexican Red Leg that lives there.

So check this out. My wife will NOT let me have a tarantula. I have begged, pleaded and bargained, but she just won't budge. Instead, she let me get an Emperor Scorpion. Has anyone ever seen one of these? It's a huge ass black scorpion from Africa. Ok, so she lets me get it and it later gives birth to 10 babies. I still don't understand why a tarantula is unacceptable, but gigantic black scorpions are okay.

Beats me, given that the scorpion is a hell of a lot more dangerous. But its less hairy. That's probably why.

The only kind of black widow I keep is the kind that sits in a small, airtight jar, floating in isopropyl alcohol. Same would go for something as poisonous as a scorpion.
