In terms of overall fighting power, nobody comes close to the US. But some other first-world countries have equipment that is equal or even somewhat better than their US equivilents (of course, the US also has equipment for which other countries have equivilents for, i.e. 100,000 ton CVNs and B-2 stealth bombers, and other pieces of equipment that only a small handful of others have equivilents of). The armed forces of several other first-world countries also have better individual training for their personnel.Joe wrote:One of the best?Durandal wrote:Draft bills make their rounds every few years or so. Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

Supposing this bill passes this time...
That depends on how many troops you'd need. The length of the draft is not determined solely by training time required IIRC, but also your demographics.BlkbrryTheGreat wrote:Unless they lengthen the amount of time required to be served....jegs2 wrote:<snip> Once that is complete, the draftee's time would be up and it would be, "Seeya!" For example, one of the supposed reasons the Soviets went from a 3-year to 2-year draft about 1968 was because of their demographics. They want to maintain Universal Military Service, but they had too many people (actually Males) in the correct age zone.
If you don't do Universal Military Service, then there would be screams of favoritism and all. It is already bad enough that in every draft, a certain quantity of people find ways to get deferments and all that.
This might cause groaning.
Darn it all I JUST passed eligibility age. I'm all broken up about that. Sometimes being a geezer is nice. Observate:

Though, admittedly, I'd probably re-up. I'm all about blowing shit up and wreaking havoc and leaving a swath of death and destruction 10 miles wide. I never got a chance to use my force protection training in combat. If in wartime, I'd do my damnedest to go Armor or something similar. Bring em on? Bring em the fuck on. I got 500 .50 cal rounds each with an individual name engraved. From America with love. *kiss kiss* bitch. You're dead. The Selective Service Agency wrote:An early step in the resumption of the inductions process would be to hold a lottery, sequencing dates of birth by random drawing, to determine the order in which registrants of prime draft age would be called for processing for induction. For a conventional draft of "untrained" manpower, a man is in the first priority group for a possible draft during the calendar year of his 20th birthday. Beginning January 1 of the year he turns 21 he would drop into the second priority category, and men born the year after he was born would move into the first priority group. Each succeeding year, a draft eligible man drops into the next lower priority group .until he has reached his 26th birthday, at which time he is over the age of liability for the draft

A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

Well. I would say we are one of the best, yes. Doesn't really matter due to nukes/and or many allies agaist you. Even the most well trained military with good equipment will most likely lose to combined industrial, military, economic power.
Prussia for exampe. Did very well, but was actually losing untill Russia pulled out of the war.

Wow, I can't believe this is still making news. Mr. RANGEL made his rounds a few months back with this tripe as a political statment. He showed up on all the news channels and all the nightly news talk shows with this crap.
I guess it was his way to opposing the war in Iraq by showing that only poor and middle class folks end up voluteering for the military and the rich don't send their kids to war.
Mr. Rangel himself is a decorated vet, so in that I admire him, but this is just political bullshit. Our military doesn't operate off the concept of conscription anymore. More with less, that's what we use today.
But with a population of 300 million, what the hell are we going to do with those troops that are forced to serve? Where the hell are you going to get the money to pay for all those troops? What kind of dope is Rangel smoking if he was actually serious about this? Can I get some of it?

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

I actually don't have to worry about the draft. My eyes are too shitty. Even so, there is no way this will be passed. Draft—>bad results at the polls.

First of all, Charles Rangel is a Democrat. Second of all, this has been a pet project of his since the run-up to Iraq. He hopes to drive more Americans against overseas deployments by putting larger numbers of their sons on the line.
Secondly, Bush still owes patronage to his own Party. He's dead in the water if he sinks the Republican boat. The draft is such a charges issue that he won't dare try to push it.
Third, the U.S. military finds the draft to be anathema. It isn't about to spend endless sums of money training personnel who will rotate out of the service before they can so much as deploy.
If Uncle Sam needs more men so desperately, he'll crank up military benefits, not put unwilling men in uniform for short periods of time.
