Yes, Saddam Hussein has won reelection in Iraq. I guess we can leave him alone now in light of his new found support of democracy.

Don't believe me?

One wonders sometimes which is worse: people in a rigged election reelecting a dictator like Saddam, or people in a free and fair election electing Islamic Fundamentalists (as they just did in Pakistan - Musharraf, what were you THINKING???? Democracy in Pakistan is a bad thing!) or willfully casting votes for the likes of Pat Buchanan.

Of course, what do you expect in a place where opposition is killed and elections are rigged? Remember in Yugoslavia, where Milosovec was so unpopular, that he lost despite rigging the elections?

Yeah, but considering that he would just have his opponent killed who would be dumb enough to try to run against him.

Trick question. None of the above.

The Iraqi election was neither free or fair and was officially regarded as nothing more than a vote of confidence rather than an election. Iraq makes no pretext of democracy.

No US president is democratically elected as the US is a democratic republic rather than a democracy.

Why? Is it because the vote is not direct?

I have never heard that therm as having a special meaning.
For example, Portugal is a republic. We elect our president directly and the government indirectly, by means of a parliement.

With the exception of the islands, there are no regions with federal authonomy.

So, is it a democracy or a democratic republic ?

Democratic republic. It has elements of both forms of government, just as ours does.

So, in a true democracy all decisions are made by direct vote?

Isn't a correct therm for our system of government representative democracy? That's how I thought it was called

It was not an election, it was a referendum to see wether the people wanted Saddam still in power.

Frankly, I'd rather have him than Bush as my presient.

That's basically what a republic is. Elected officials represent the people in a republic.

Just that Saddam Hussein isn't as stupid as George W. Bush is. I would atleast want a smart person in office.
