Is God on America's Side?

Post by Darth Wong »

I was just watching The Daily Show and I saw a clip from the last Democratic presidential candidate debate. A reporter from the New York Times asked Mr. Kerry: "Is God on America's Side?"

WHAT THE FUCK KIND OF BACKWARD-ASSED IDIOT ASKS A QUESTION LIKE THAT IN A POLITICAL DEBATE?

One that works for the New York Times apparently.
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

It wold have been great if he had said.. "I dont think God cares" or "what god?"

I would have said "I think that question is a little innapropriate. We should be discussing issues, not religion"

What was even better was when she asked, "Are you a liberal, yes or no?" and Jon Stewart commented, "Please answer the question! I don't want to have to think of a better one!"

Fwoosh, there goes a big chunk of the electorate. Especially the last answer. It would be political suicide. An atheist could be elected President, but if he constantly agitates about it then people will get annoyed. That's political reality and all the politicians know it.

Bullshit. No atheist will be elected president in the religiofascist political environment of America. It's not a matter of "agitating" about it; unless he lies about it and claims to worship God, he's fucked.

I ko i would have been political suicide, but I still think it would be great to have a politcian say that... Ir at least dodge the question... they dodge all the other ones, why not the God question?

An athiest get elected President in America? In what, 2080? Even if said athiest was by far the most qualified and the republican running against him was Zombie Strom Thurmond running on the "Braaaaaaaains..." ticket, the athiest would lose, simply because Zombie Strom Thurmond is clearly a christian.

Wont mentioned lying about it. What the heck did you think I was talking about? And I doubt an eminently qualified atheist would lose to a zombie, because all the fundies would break out the holy water on sight.

The worst thing about politics is that the best answer would have been "What kind of question is that?", which is exactly the point that Jon Stewart made when he skewered the NY Times idiot who posed the question. But if an actual political candidate reacted that way, that reporter (and most others) would scribble in the morning edition that "Mr. Kerry became flustered and hostile when asked questions about his beliefs".

Fucking sound-bite politics, where people read their favourite pundits' interpretation of a political candidate's views rather than the candidates' actual views ...

I am actually thinking about running a social experiment in 2032. I will run as a republican atheist. No political mumbo jumbo, just tell people the truth No lies, no being vague. I will spell out my plans in simpe language, giving details, defining my terms, citing sources. I will be concise and to the point, supporting every argment and not appealing to their emotion.

I will make fun of myself as well as ruthlessly harang the other candidates for being to vague...

Think anyone would vote for a REAL Straight sShooter?

You'd need a political resume if you want any chance whatsoever, even if you weren't an atheist.
