An athiest get elected President in America? In what, 2080? Even if said athiest was by far the most qualified and the republican running against him was Zombie Strom Thurmond running on the "Braaaaaaaains..." ticket, the athiest would lose, simply because Zombie Strom Thurmond is clearly a christian.
Zombies Christians? Heh.

Oh no! Zombie Thurmond just went for Stone Phillips when he tried to ask him about his policies on the economy! Now Zombie Wellstone got Phillips leg and they are tucking in like some macabre scene from Lady and the Tramp! It's bedlam!

Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.
As the God thing relates to politics, when people ask me why I won't be voting for George Bush, I tell them, "because he insists on shoving his Christianity down our throats every time he speaks and uses superstition to make important desicions of state. Ergo, I think it's time to give someone else a shake at this."
98% of people, Republican, Demmycrat, or whatever, shut up at that, simply because I don't think they know how to respond to such a thing. Political correctness and all that. 1% says, "Right on!" or something to that effect. The other 1% goes, "OMG U AER TERORTITS GOD HATAR" and things go downhill from there.
I wouldn't fall for such an obvious trap as "Does God favor the US?" Of course, that's why I'll never be President; I'd make people pass out due to shock with my response.

You all are missing the point. The question is not about religion or God per se. It is assumed that God is on the side of (and favors) the Righteous, Just, and the Good. So what the questioner is really asking of Kerry is, "Do you believe that your country is righteous, just, and good?" And Kerry blew it, because all he could manage to say was that he hopes so, and thinks that his country has been for "most of" it's past. In other words, Kerry doesn't know whether America, and Americans, are good and just. Any answer to the question other than an unhesitating "YES" is the wrong answer, at least if the answerer doesn't want to insult America and Americans in general. It means Kerry is Agnostic on America's goodness, at best. At worst, it means he doesn't think America is good, at least at present, and just didn't want to admit it. It means Hanoi John still hates America.
Kerry's response also begs another question: Just when do you think God has not been on America's side in the past, Senator? When was America not righteous, just, and good? Could it be during.....Vietnam??? When you were jumping off your shitty little boat onto shore (violating standing orders to the contrary) to gun down a wounded enemy soldier(contrary to the Military Code of Conduct) so you could put yourself in for an undeserved Silver Star? When you were acting as Ho Chi Minh's Propagandist in Chief, in betrayal of your own countrymen and your erstwhile "band of brothers" you left back in Vietnam after your quickie 4 month tour of duty?
I think the best answer would be something along the lines of: "God is on His own side. The question is, and one we must continually ask, is, are we on God's side? Do we persue policies that are both just and wise?"
That would have really knocked them dead. Whether "just and wise" accurately depicts the activities of $DEITY are open to debate, but just about everyone can get behind things that fit those two criteria.
Another good response would be: "I can't presume to speak for God."
