Canadian Election What If
What if the way elections are done in Canada were change to resemble the US,wich mean the whole country could chose who they would really want as Prime Minister,so Canada would never again be stuck with a PM from Quebec province?
For almost 20 years it was a Quebecer who was in charge,Brian Mulroney from Bay Comeau then Jean Chretien from Shawinigan, now until the next election its Paul Martin from......

I'm having a hard time understanding your democratic process. Are you saying only people from Quebec can become Prime Minister? Or are you just saying you're sick of the Prime Ministers you've had who were from Quebec? Forgive my ignorance, the bolded text is the source of my confusion.Montcalm wrote:What if the way elections are done in Canada were change to resemble the US,wich mean the whole country could chose who they would really want as Prime Minister,so Canada would never again be stuck with a PM from Quebec province?

Yes, back in the war of 1867, Quebec invaded and annexed the rest of Canada and we have been ruled by them ever since...Stofsk wrote: I'm having a hard time understanding your democratic process. Thats because of the inherent stupidity in Canadian politics.Montcalm wrote:I`ll let someone else explain it to you,i`m trying to find the right way to explain it but each time i rewrite it,it sound stupid
After all the Constitution was written by the PM and the generaly public didnt have a say at all.

i thought the US election system was a mess. At least we get an election, it may be a little shaky in close races, but we get to vote for our leader. The UK, New Zealand anf the Aussies use the same system, right?

The only few things the US has that look shitty is these punchcards, using some machine to vote.....it would be easier to make an X beside the name of the presidential candidateCol. And this year don`t let Florida screw it for your nation

In Australia EVERYBODY votes for our respective leaders; the way it sounds here, only a small percentage of Canadians can vote for their leader, or the leadership is limited to Quebecese. If I am wrong in this, please correct me.Col. Crackpot wrote:i thought the US election system was a mess. I`ll try to explain it the best i can, each party has candidates in many sectors and the leader of the parties have their sector where they campaign to be elected,in the case of Chretien it was where he`s from "Shawinigan" and if he lose there he can go in the sector of one of his winning deputies for a complimentary election, its quite screwed up and it suckStofsk wrote:In Australia EVERYBODY votes for our respective leaders; the way it sounds here, only a small percentage of Canadians can vote for their leader, or the leadership is limited to Quebecese. I was being sarcastic. In Canada's system, the voters only get to select members for the House of Commons. The majority party elects the Prime Minister, who basically has dictatorial powers, within the limits imposed by the Constitution. And since at this point Canada only really has one viable political party, there's not much Canadians can do if they don't like their PM.
Fortunately, it's Canada. The worst any PM would ever do is slash helath care funds and send even more Federal loot to Quebec.![Wink ](./images/smilies/icon_wink.gif)

It's worse than that. Our entire executive branch of government is appointed, not elected. The prime minister isn't even our head of state, that post is held by the Governor General, a representative of the Queen of England(Long live the Queen!!!).Col. Our senate is appointed as well and members hold their seats for life. We have no real credible opposition party.
Canadian politics are quite unique in the world and are the reason that I usually just end up voting for a fringe group such as the Rhino or Marijuana parties.

I'd imagine the Marijuana party enjoys a fair bit of popularity over there in BC, after all the magic bud is one of the province's leading exports.Korvan wrote:Canadian politics are quite unique in the world and are the reason that I usually just end up voting for a fringe group such as the Rhino or Marijuana parties.

It's funny that both Cuba and Iraq (under Sadaam) were both more "democratic" than Canada in that their executive branchs of government are elected.Col. Canada's system is seemingly set up for all kinds of horrible things to happen. You could put an identical model of it in just about any random third world country and end up with a "democratically elected" genocidal tyrant. But since Canada is the most civilized country on Earth, your all powerful PMs spend a decade or two letting their buddies suck on the federal tit and fiddle with the health care budget until everybody hates it, then quietly retire.
