Diplomacy game anyone?

Post by StarshipTitanic »

We seem to have a large community here and I think one of these could take off. Diplomacy is a board game where each player struggles for total domination over the others. The catch is apparent, you must successfully manipulate your enemies to succeed while they do the same to you! :D

www.diplom.org has all the info required for beginners. We could play on the standard European WW1-type map (first maps in the map section) or, perhaps, on this baby right here:

http://www.diplom.org/Online/maps/imperial-small.gif

It's the whole world! Isn't that cool???

EDIT: So far we have 11 players:

Captain Lennox

Exonerate
Friend Due
Friend Tre
Tatterdemalion

A note to everyone: we'd need 7-8 players for the original, 1900 European map (either 7 players and a gamemaster or a player can double as a GM) or a whopping 13-14 for Imperial. Some Imperial countries can be left out, but that forces certain countries to play.

I can promise an additional player, but he doesn't post here at all (I think he has an account). He has some experience.

Does anyone know a site where I might learn the rules to this game?

I'll type something up for you myself, but you can page through the link I posted at the top.

Hmmm, instead of typing anything, just read through the actual manual in .pdf format:

Huzzah! I'll wait a few more days to see if anyone else is interested, but as of now we have enough players for a normal game if one GMs along with playing. Any opinions on a GM/player, or should we wait for an 8th person?

In all the games I've played the GM was a player, and we managed just fine. It would be nice if we had some sort of way to make everybodies moves released at once, but I basically trust anyone here not to cheat.

Wow. That's a bit larger than the game I played at school which was only Europe...

Count me in. I need some practice...

I've gotten two more requests to play from some friends of mine, which, along with Exonerate, pushes the players up to 10. This far exceeds the amount required for a Standard (1900) game, but it's 3 below the amount needed for Imperial. So...are there any objections to Imperial or do we sign them up as alternatives?

I abstain from any vote.
Friends 1-3 all vote for Imperial (can you blame them? ;) )

Standard: 0
Imperial: 3
Abstains: 2

EDIT: Votes coming in...

Makes no real difference to me, but I will need some help as this would be my first time playing. I abstain.

Imperial, some people's greater experience will be less unfair if we're using a board that most aren't familiar with.

Pretty much. All ingame discussion can be carried out through IM programs and emails, including moves. Seasons will be posted in their own thread, along with the game map. In that, you post your retreats (builds are private, so they are emailed to the GM), and perhaps some fake newspaper headlines praising your victories or minimalizing defeats. ;)

Have room for one more?
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.
