Wikipedia link.For example, scholars who believe the Book of Revelation refers to real people and events argue that the number represents the value of Nero or Neron Caesar (נרון קסר, Nrwn Qsr*) in Hebrew letters, which also have numerical values (note that Hebrew is written from right to left):
r S q n w r n
666 = 200 + 60 + 100 + 50 + 6 + 200 + 50
Some early texts of the Book of Revelation use 616 instead, which would represent the alternative Hebrew spelling נרו קסר, Nrw Qsr:
r S q w r n
616 = 200 + 60 + 100 + 6 + 200 + 50
*Note: Hebrew נרון קסר, Nrwn Qsr = Greek Νερων Καισαρ, Nerôn Kaisar, though קסר, qSr, should strictly speaking be כסר, kSr.

Six-hundred and sixty-six refers specifically to Nero Caesar, who is regarded as being the Anti-Christ.

That's not what the History Channel claims. The number in question isn't even 666, because the translation that most take from was incorrect, and the antichrist it refers to is allegedly Caligula, not Nero.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:Six-hundred and sixty-six refers specifically to Nero Caesar, who is regarded as being the Anti-Christ.
The reason I brought it up is that people are getting all worked up over 666 because it's commonly thought of as the number of Satan and all, when apparently it's actually neither.
PS: I wrote this before Spanky added his quote and link, and I looked on the History Channel's website for an article on the show I watched about this so I'd have something to quote too and I can't find one. Frustrating.

Hey I saw that too. The other number was based on scraps of the Bible from a dump in Egypt I think.Zaia wrote:That's not what the History Channel claims. It was on "Investigating History" on the History Channel and I can't find any information on the HC website to quote their sources. Annoying.neoolong wrote:Hey I saw that too. The other number was based on scraps of the Bible from a dump in Egypt I think.
And, a dump in Egypt? Do me a favour, neoolong. Stay off my side.

Then why does the Book Of Revelation claim that 666 is "The Number Of The Beast"?Zaia wrote:That's not what the History Channel claims. *sighs* Let me say this again. According to the History Channel, the number IS NOT 666--it was translated incorrectly. John was alledgedly writing about Caligula, his Roman enemy, and not some vague and undefined representation of evil. The number for Caligula was either 616 or 676; I honestly cannot remember and have found no articles at the HC website to either back me up or disprove me. I'm inclined to say 616 simply because Spanky brought that number up as well, but I really don't know.Peregrin Toker wrote:Then why does the Book Of Revelation claim that 666 is "The Number Of The Beast"?
If both the number 666 is incorrect and the fact that that incorrect number actually points to a notorious Roman emperor and not the essence of Satan like some think, I simply find it amusing that people are getting all worked up over those ticket stubs. *shrugs*
And thanks, Spanky.

I had always heard that the concept of the Antichrist was invented or at least used by some weird French prophet who couldn't put any specific info in his writings for fear of persecution. According to him, there's supposed to be three, and the clues he left have allowed the first two to be identified as Napolean and Hitler while the third has yet to appear. Has anyone else heard of this?

Sure you're not thinking of Nostrodamus? Hitler and Napoleon have also been common candidates for the Antichrist.
The term "Antichrist" appears in the New Testiment only once, in 1 John 2:22, and early Christians were the ones who made the connection between the Antichrist and the Mark of the Beast from Revelations.
I think that it's most likely that six-hundred and sixty-six originally refere to Nero specifically, or at least to the Roman emperors of the early Christian era in general.
