XP SP2 Analysis
Linky
http://www.unixwiz.net/techtips/xp-sp2.html
Read that link I am exited about the new SP2, it has some real and good security improvements
There might be some truuth in that MS is putting security first now, some of that stuff will annoy users and break commonly used apps.

TV Sports Boxing won't run on XP, period, and the original X-COM doesn't work very well at all, altough I'm not sure if this is a product of incompatibility or my far too fast processor causing problems with the game.
Can't hurt to have a bit extra at the OS level, though, no?I'll stick to my Mozilla, Spybot SD, Spywareblaster, AVG, and Kerio.
MS security makes me laugh...
Dosemu is pretty nice for running dos games on Linux at a decent speed (Dosbox is slowwwwww).

History? I love history! First, something happens, then, something else happens! It's so sequential!! Thank you first guy, for writing things down!

I know Alpha Centauri has issues with modern CPUs. YOu have to set a flag in an ini file for it to start, though it STILL says that the processor isn't supportedCrazy_Vasey wrote:TV Sports Boxing won't run on XP, period, and the original X-COM doesn't work very well at all, altough I'm not sure if this is a product of incompatibility or my far too fast processor causing problems with the game.

This is actually quite good, though I suspect that many will be unhappy that the "rename GIF as TXT" trick will cease to work (which is the proper way of doing things, hence why Mozilla will not render such an image).
The no-execute flag will only work on AMD64/IA32E and IA64 processors. It will not work on IA32 because it is unsupported. It will almost certainly break Sun's Java Runtime Environment in the process -- but its (IMHO) worth the headaches to get rid of many a buffer overflow attack.

Thats what VMware is for, run a dedicated DOS/win9x box.Crazy_Vasey wrote:I hope these changes won't break old games. That would really ruin my day.
I really dont care about Sun's JRE, it cant even handle spaces in paths...phongn wrote:It will almost certainly break Sun's Java Runtime Environment in the process -- but its (IMHO) worth the headaches to get rid of many a buffer overflow attack.

People shell out +$400 for a graphics card generally due to a single game, why wouldnt they pay for something to allow a large number of old games to run.phongn wrote:At $300, VMWare Workstation is rather expensive
That is if they dont aquire it someother way.
Also I'm fairly sure there would be cheaper alternatives which do the same thing.

Theres more compatibility options than there seems. Theres a "Compatibility Toolkit" on MS's site that lets you tweak just about any option, far more than you get in properties.TheDarkOne wrote:Compatibility mode doesn't work for everything...like I'm pretty sure you still can't play Duke Nukem 3D on XP compatibility mode or no.evilcat4000 wrote:There is always compatibility mode if you cant play your old games on XP.

Not many people are actually stupid enough to pre-order top-end cards (like my friend who just "had" to blow $350 because he couldn't wait to get his hands on a Geforce 3) when they can just wait a little while and buy a card near but not at the top of the pack. (read: me grabbing a GF4 4400 for only $189 when they could still be found for >$250)ggs wrote:People shell out +$400 for a graphics card generally due to a single game, why wouldnt they pay for something to allow a large number of old games to run.

In any case, if you're really desperate to run those old games, there's usually old computers to be found (garage sales, Goodwill/other thrift stores, eBay, etc.) that would do a good job of it, for less than $300.

What about Bochs? I'm sure most of the people complaining about backwards compatibility have cpu cycles and ram to spare, especially if they are willing to tolerate Dosbox(which is a POS, Dosemu w/ freedos is faster, just needs tweaking for sound).
