Disabling/removing explorer.exe on startup (WinXP)
I checked msconfig and didn't see a way to disable it from there. What I want to do is have my desktop load up without it, so I can free up some ram, get used to and practice running my computer via the (limited) dos command line, and be able to run explorer through task manager if I so choose.
Anyone know how to do it, if possible?
Thanks for reminding me, Bean

"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

Why would you want to disable it?
Ending it when installing XviD or when you're AFK is one thing... but why do you want it disabled from the getgo?

Seriously, I heard you can free a good amount of ram (21+ megs) and CPU with the process ended. I want to get used to operating something from a command line, anyway.

If you want to get used to operating something from a command line, you might as well just switch to Linux. People use Windows with the start menu and the rest of the GUI on for a reason you know.Hamel wrote:Because I want to feel smarter than your average bear?

a) Get a spare junker to run it on, or
b) Back everything up on DVDs
But I don't have a DVD burner, and 120 gigs of backups on CD isn't a pretty sight

Besides what would ya use the command line for anyway? Unless you have really old DOS versions of Word perfect/Lotus/etc, I can't see how you could use programs w/o requiring the GUI to be loaded.

I use to run without explorer back in my old 256ram days. Just running everything from Task manager. Ahh the good ol' days...

BTW, I tried that, and it didn't change anything.

Oh man, there's some kind of linux distro that you can run entirely from the CD without needing an installation. My brother showed it to me months ago but I've forgotten the name of it. Anyone know?

Windows's GUI will load no matter what, but you can use something besides EXPLORER.EXE (like LiteStep, for example, or the Task Manager).GoldenFalcon wrote:Besides what would ya use the command line for anyway? Erm....why don't you just find yourself a nice shell to replace Explorer with?

When I load up explorer, a whole SHITLOAD of processes come with it. Commit charge shot up to 128.phongn wrote:How on Earth is Explorer using up that much memory?
Fuck, tried to reduce it by shutting down svchost, system going down in 10 secs =/ (edit: back up)
Anyone know how to access display options without loading up explorer? I ran control panel from task manager, but that also brought up explorer.
