ROTK releases May 25th on DVD

Post by theski »

Kicking off this week's news is...some little movie called The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (perhaps you've heard of it?) This small-budget, little seen chamber drama will see two new releases this year - a two-disc special edition on May 25th featuring the theatrical cut of Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning opus, and later this year, a four-disc extravaganza featuring the usual extended version and commentary with every name listed in the credits, etc.

For the full scoop click to check out the press release, but in brief, expect the two-disc edition to feature behind-the-scenes specials, featurettes, theatrical trailers, TV spots, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy super-trailer, a preview of the upcoming The Lord of the Rings based video game from Electronic Arts and a link to exclusive online content about the motion picture trilogy. Available in separate anamorphic widescreen and full screen versions, retail will be $29.95 each. You can also check out a preview of the two-disc set's menus at our multimedia gallery. And watch this space for more updates and a full review of the set in the coming weeks

Now that is something to celebrate my birthday with.. :)

What i don't like about the Extended Editions is that they never have the trailers on. I like trailers (hell, sometimes a good trailer can make up for a crap movie!) so i am a bit miffed as to why they aren't included in the Extended Editions!

I'm gonna wait for whatever super-spiffy box set that has all three movies in it to come out. :)

The trailer for The Two Towers is on the EE version of The Fellowship of the Ring.

They don't put the same material on both versions so the completists will buy both. Luckily, I have more sense than money and will not waste the latter on a (relatively) subpar theatrical cut when I can have the film as it was meant to be shown.

I know a completist who has to have everything. She's a LotR nut though, but I never saw the point. She's even waiting for a box set with all three films.

Does anyone know what they cut out? I'd love to see more action in the battle of the Pellenor fields. Also, maybe they'll flesh Denethor out some more. He seemed like a total moron in the movie. He may have gone mad, but he was never stupid.

New Line wants to do a box set soon but Jackson does not. He wants to wait until after King Kong and add a blooper reel (amongst other things) and possibly use one of the follow-ons to DVD (BD-ROM or HD-DVD).

They cut the confrontation between Gandalf and the Witch King. Also I think there was supposed to be actual fighting with the dead army, rather than just having them sweep the battlefield like a wave automatically. And the negotiations with Saruman at the beginning. Other than that, I don't know anything about the seventy minutes they're putting back in. :D
It's Rogue, not Rouge!
