Imbecile shows "Passion" clips to 6th-graders

Post by Darth Wong »

From CNN
WASHINGTON (AP) -- An elementary school teacher was suspended last week after school officials learned that he showed students excerpts from the movie "The Passion of the Christ."

Ronald Anthony, who teaches at Malcolm X Elementary School, was placed on paid leave while investigators look into the incident, Elfreda Massie, the interim superintendent for District of Columbia Public Schools, said Friday.

Massie said Anthony acknowledged showing some of his sixth-grade students portions of the R-rated film on Tuesday. The movie depicts the crucifixion of Jesus and includes violent scenes. At least 16 students are believed to have seen portions of the film, Massie told The Associated Press.

School officials learned of the incident when a parent complained, Massie said.

The school sent a note to parents Wednesday, saying the film shouldn't have been shown and that the teacher believed it connected historical events from the students' social studies book.

Massie said Anthony "used poor judgment" and should have relied on more appropriate materials to for the lesson.

Attempts to reach Anthony for comment were unsuccessful.

School officials also said they are looking into how Anthony obtained a copy of the film, which has not been released on video.

The Mel Gibson film has drawn criticism from Jewish leaders who fear it will lead to anti-Jewish sentiment, while winning praise from some Christians for its portrayal of Christ.
Is anyone surprised that this would happen sooner or later?

I'm not really suprised, but it does make me wonder what the content of the "lesson" he was teaching the children was.
Devolution is quite as natural as evolution, and may be just as pleasing, or even a good deal more pleasing, to God. If the average man is made in God's image, then a man such as Beethoven or Aristotle is plainly superior to God, and so God may be jealous of him, and eager to see his superiority perish with his bodily frame.

Number one, isn't that kind of illegal, with the movie still being in theatres?

Number two, he may not have shown the violent stuff from the film to the kids. But if he did, he oughta be fired, no questions asked.

The only surprise is that this didn't happen sooner. See, it's okay to show this to kids because it's educational and promotes the truth about the birth of Christianity and how our Messiah died for us.

I only ever recall seeing Schindler's List in RE class...

It says that he had a copy of the film, that would be illegal.

From what I'm guessing those clips are pussy shit. I've seen much worse before that age. I can't say that I ever saw more than fiction in them. Not that the jerk had the right to impose himself on those kids like that.

I wonder if the MPAA will come after the teacher for piracy.

Whatever your feelings are about Christianity, that movie is simply unsuitable for children. Even if you leave out the worst scenes, the images really are dreadful from fade-in to fade-out. If Gibson's intent was to demonstrate misery as the foundation of Catholic theology, he succeded beyond anyone's wildest imaginations.

Eleven years old and you'd seen worse material than a movie which Roger Ebert described as the most violent movie he had ever seen?

I'm going to just be a little skeptical of that.

RE? I remember seeing Schindler's List for... either history of English, and that was in year 10 (15-16 years old). We of course had to get permission from parents to see it, along with other films (somewhat ironic, considering I had seen it when it first came out). When were you shown Schindler's List at school?

Was it out on video at that time?

Because, I'm thinking this guy may not be just an enthusiastic teacher if he got a hold of a movie that came out like last week.

Yes, of course.

Yeah, but who cares if it was a pirated movie? I mean, assuming it is a film that might actually have some worth as education (which The Passion probably doesn't, unless it has to do with the way Romans did business - and even there I doubt they got it right - do they nail Jesus through the palms?) for the kids, who cares if it was pirated or not? Well, the kids probably don't. :P 8)

I'm just saying it seems to point out what might be his reason for doing it.
