Homeworld 2

Post by Straha »

I've been thinking of getting it, but is it worth it? And is it half as good as the original Homeworld?

I've heard very few negative reviews of it.
I need to get it and perhaps some more ram to boot.

Kicks ass. The 2nd one is hard compared to the original. Just take the story as is, don't worry too much about continuity.

Worth every brass penny. Homeworld is my 2nd favourite game ever behind Horizons.

I can't wait till they start making mods for the game.

It has already begun.

I personally prefer HW1, but HW2 is still good.

I bought it simply for the mods that'll be ported to it (Macross and B5 mainly)... but after initial misgivings about the revamp of the build system, its quite a good game IF you put the point defence mod on, so caps aren't useless. I must say I like it... even if the levels are too small.

Then it must be hard as fuck - in HW1 I couldn't even make it past the 4th mission...

There are some missions that are nearly impossible in the second game, too. The fourth mission is a pretty much hopeless situation should the 20-frigate "death fleet" decide to charge your Mothership at the start of the mission (happened the first time I played the mission -- this is a bug that the 1.1 patch fixes), and the twelfth becomes hair-pullingly difficult if you enter with a large fleet due to the dynamic difficulty (which adds more enemy ships as your fleet grows).

I'll agree with Sr.mal's suggestion. Taken on its own, the HW2 story is palatable, though it pales when compared with the original and defies continuity.

Homeworld 2 is an excellent game. I plan on upgrading my video card just for this game.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

hw2 is a good game ... well at least after the first patch. Before that it had some bad bugs and explots. For example by clicking the right buttons you got partly control of enemy units.

Other problems included hosting problems if you had a router or were behind a firewall. But these problems are fixed now.

And some words to the difficulty:
1.There's a simple rule within the game. The more you have, the more the CPU got. This includes ships and resource units and means that you cannot cheat, because the CPU just adepts to your "cheat" (like editing the persistX.lua)
2. The most difficult levels are (normally) level 4, 12 and 13. I know this because in the german community and at forums.relicnews.com the most complains were about these missions.
3.Sometimes its helpfull to destroy you entire fleet at the end of one level (except the takes-long-to-build ships like carriers) and build all the fleet up again in the next level.
4.Dont flame me, but for a old homeworld veteran like me the missions were even too easy :D

I played Homeworld from the very first moment and thus i know a lot about these games ^^. It was me who found the first bad unit exploit in hw2 and i made a little site describing all the units (even if i havent had the time to update the values to patch 1.01)

http://www.silentthunder.de/sith/units.htm

Perhaps its a little bit helpfull.
