Reuters just confirmed the letter, also
"We have succeeded in infiltrating the heart of crusader Europe and struck one of the bases of the crusader alliance," said the letter which called the attacks "Operation Death Trains." There was no way of authenticating the letter, a copy of which was faxed to Reuters' office in Dubai by the London-based al-Quds al-Arabi newspaper.

Why would the Basques cooperate with Al Quaeda? Aside from causing mindless destruction, how does it advance the cause of Basque independence?

Cooperation doesnt help them at ALL. They're not stupid, they know well enough that cooperating puts them on Bush's shitlist and that isn't good.

The explosives are likely the same because both groups are probably buying from the same criminal organizations.

Death is an easy penalty for such acts. They deserve being thrown to lions or termites or God knows what other horrific death.

It doesn't. I think at this point the only people still pointing seriously at the ETA is the Spanish government.

I don't think they did cooperate. Them getting entangled in this will rob them of what little support they still have, ETA has been going downhill in that respect for the past several years after their murder of a prominent and popular Basque politician. I'm inclined to believe the AQ is responsible.

I doubt we'll get blamed directly for it, but indirectly? Hell yes, just wait for the next Robert Fisk column.

What is the European reaction, Colonel Olrik? Over here most folks havn't heard yet, and won't until they turn on the evening news.

Indeed. Methinks there is going to be a collective sound of *STOMP* to be heard all over this continent in response, and I wouldn't want to be at the place where the hell comes down...

Best gauge of the reaction will be to read the papers tommorow.

The European reaction will possibly be an endless procession of discussion groups, task forces, and committees to discuss what means should be taken...

If it were France, I would agree, but there's a reason why no one has ever conquered Spain. They screw around, and then when the chips are down they kick danger square in the nuts.

This seems like an odd move for al Qaeda. Here they had the US and most of the EU solidly divided about the War on Terror. This will only serve to unify them in the hunt for his ass.

Consider this: If the EU isn't screaming for their blood, it's alot harder to paint them as 'evil crusaders'.

Two months from now the Euro 2004 will take place in Portugal. I don't think we (or any other country in the E.U) have the capacity to alone ensure a competition free of these kinds of attacks, if they are really determined in doing them. At the very least, E.U military, police and intelligence cooperation will have to improve dramatically, in a short period of time.

From what my parents have told me, the portuguese are taking it very badly, almost as badly as the spanish. Today in the evening the germans were already talking quite a lot about it. Don't really know about the rest, in the next days we shall see.
