Still, I wonder what kind of reaction I'd get if I were to post WTC themed version of that kind of humour. Do you think I'd have to wait a few years to get some laughs?

"Red herring" fallacy. Lord Poe is comparing well-documented WTC tragedy to the specific crucifixion and torture of Jesus, which is NOT historical fact, and which is NOT as bad as thousands of people dying (1 person vs 3000 people; do the fucking math), and which is documented in only the sketchiest terms by his own followers.Hobot wrote:So you deny the historical fact that thousands of innocent (and guilty) people were crucified?Lord Poe wrote:No, because the World Trade Center was a real tragedy; not a fairy tale.

Strawman. More than one man was crucified.Darth Wong wrote:"Red herring" fallacy. I think I see your point though. If I were to replace the man jumping from the building with Jesus, or some other person who may or may not have existed but is worshipped by millions, it would be okay.

So? Lord Poe's image was not making fun of the entire concept of crucifixion; just the specific crucifixion of Jesus. The only strawman is yours.Hobot wrote:Strawman. Any actual victim of the WTC has still-living friends and family. It is something of an understatement to say that such a person cannot be compared to someone who is more of a concept than a documented individual.I think I see your point though. I've been playing the Devil's advocate, well I guess it would be more accurate to say Christ's advocate, in this thread. I'm an atheist so I don't find the image offensive. However, I wonder if we're not being too crass by mocking something that millions hold dear. To many Christians, Jesus is a real person and someone they feel a strong bond towards, to mock his death (real or not) to them might be as bad as mocking the death of a victim of the WTC tragedy. It seems that we're are all too happy and willing to mock Christians and their faith. In some cases (fundies like Fred Phelps) it is obviously acceptable, but I think we step over the line too often.

Of course Jesus is a real person to them; they act as though they talk to him on the phone every fucking Friday! But objectively speaking, he is not. And the fact that they believe in it doesn't change anything; each time I bite into a hamburger I'm sure I must offend hundreds of millions of Hindus who believe that cows are sacred, but that doesn't mean I should feel ashamed of it. They have yet to provide a good reason for their anger, which is the same thing I can say about Christians who are offended when I treat their particular mythology with as much levity as I do all of the others.Hobot wrote:I've been playing the Devil's advocate, well I guess it would be more accurate to say Christ's advocate, in this thread.
