Exactly why it's a non-starter. Like Anthrax, you may kill the odd one or two by simply bad luck, but other than that normal penicillin is more than enough. That is unless they modified it, but they'd need a decent lab and a ton of funding and skill. Probability: 0.Sea Skimmer wrote: We wouldn't even need to bother with containment, anyone cleaner then the Dark Age Christian European population is quite safe. The Japanese couldn't even get it to spread among the Chinese population.
I'm sure Aum Shinrikyo produced some VX but couldn't spread it from the top of buildings or any test sites they used and it ultimately affected them more than anything.VX is a real bitch to produce and store. Sarin is a possibility though; if the stuff used for the Tokyo subway attack had been properly refined the five thousand people injured in the attack all would have died along with the eleven who already did. And that was all from a container the size of a thermos.
Sarin is much more doable given VX is the most lethal substance out there and damned hard to disperse. But this all depends on weather as well as deployment. The attack in Tokyo was perfect because it was a confined space, open air makes it a lot harder to get going if people notice it and the area is cordoned off.
There's always the crop duster route, but good luck with that too.

HE'S ALIVE!!!
Got a call from a friend, apparently my friend was wounded, triaged, and when they saw his passport they took him to the embassy, and from there to his hostal.
He's got a broken wrist, lacerations, and partial hearing loss from being in the train terminal when the bombs went off. But he's alive and going back to Africa after an extra three weeks of vacation.
I would like to thank everyone who was supportive of me and for their kind words. It is a blessing.
Fixed your size code, Chewie. It's good to hear that your friend is alive and well.

OMG. Okay, I don't mean to sound insensitive but can we just all move the fuck on. I'm tired of hearing about how we should apologize for the actions of our nearly ancient past. The time for Spain to apologize for that has come and gone, and Spain is hardly governed by the same type of mind set.Joe wrote:Someone's response to today's attacks on another forum I visit:
Unbelievable.Speaking of terrorism, why aren't the Spanish apologizing for the Inquisition? Not to mention Columbus.
This goes for any country....move on.

Oh dear, I hope this doesn't affect my plan to go to spain this summer. I really don't want to miss a chance to see my grandmother.

I wouldn't worry about this summer, things should be settled down in a few months.

The Olympics are already a disaster waiting to happen. Most of it isn't even built and ready yet, and won't be.

Not true ... we just can't afford to have any setbacks from now on. Building in Greece is a little different than building in other countries (damn ministry of Archiology)!CaptainChewbacca wrote:The Olympics are already a disaster waiting to happen. For example, a few years ago there was an earthquake near my home town. My grandfathers house was damaged, and the government ordered that it had to be demolished and rebuilt for safety reasons, they even provided the funds to do so. Sounds all good, right?
Well the building was just about to get underway, what happens? We find Byzantine ruins underneath his old house. Ministry of Archiology moves in, 6 months later we are finally allowed to continue building, once the sight has been excavated.
Most of the problems with the Olympic games were the same thing. They were trying to build the Olympic village for the athletes, what do they find? A Roman Aqueduct. They tried covering it up again before the ministry found out, but they did. The builders were ordered to design around it.
Now the Aqueduct has been restored and acts as the cetre piece of the village.
The new Metro that was being designed; here's how you ride. Descend 3000 years of Grecko-Roman-Byzantine-Ottoman history, catch your train, get off at your desired station, and then ascend 3000 years of Grecko-Roman-Byzantine-Ottoman history. They unearthed so many artificats that they are on display in the actual stations, rather than a museum, because there wasn't enough room for them all!
Scary stuff.
Although on the day of the Madrid blasts, 400 Greek and 100 US troops were on an exercise simulating a terrorist attack in Athens.

Now that you mention it, I wonder if the US hasn't started taking steps. Our campus is within spitting distance of a nuclear plant, and there's a wing of ANG F-16's based at the airport to the west. Guess what's been flying all afternoon with long spikey things on the wings?theski wrote:Anybody want to guess the next line.... PLANES< TRAINS< and ......???????????? It is certainly a frightening prospect, but security will be very tight, and the difficulty of launching a successful attack high. After all, it's not as if Al-Quaeda was a pacifist organization during the 2000 Olympics, yet nothing happened.Crown wrote:Well Olrik mentioned it, and I will too; Euro2004 and the Olympics ...
It's easier to strike at a place and time where people aren't really expecting anything. Neither Sept 11 or this train bombing were the kind of events that someone could specifically foresee beforehand, unlike an Olympic attack.

I seem to recall some company or other smacking Phantom (? - might not have been phantom) jet fighters at high velocity into nuclear power plant building walls because of this sort of eventuality, the wall held, I dont think you need worry too much about your nuclear power plant.Thag wrote:Now that you mention it, I wonder if the US hasn't started taking steps. F-4 Phantom fighters??? I just don't think people would be wasting multimillion-dollar aircraft upon trying to smack down walls the size of those they use in nuclear plants... more like they were using computer modeling to calculate if the walls could stand a force equivalent to the impact of an aircraft that fit in a certain size range, and they used a F-4 as their example. That's what I figure, anyway... if they actually did, they were probably drone-piloting it.I seem to recall some company or other smacking Phantom (? - might not have been phantom) jet fighters at high velocity into nuclear power plant building walls because of this sort of eventuality, the wall held, I dont think you need worry too much about your nuclear power plant.
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.
i just read an article about these types of attacks on nuclear power plants. they said that a lot of plants would not be able to withstand such attacks. that´s why some folks were proposing to build high concrete nets to fend of air planes.The_Lumberjack wrote:I seem to recall some company or other smacking Phantom (? - might not have been phantom) jet fighters at high velocity into nuclear power plant building walls because of this sort of eventuality, the wall held, I dont think you need worry too much about your nuclear power plant.Thag wrote:Now that you mention it, I wonder if the US hasn't started taking steps. the article was talking about power plants in germany. i don´t know if powerplants in other countries might be safer.
On that note, guess that in San Diego has been hovering around with machine guns on each side?Thag wrote: Now that you mention it, I wonder if the US hasn't started taking steps. CANDU reactors have extremely thick steel-reinforced concrete containment structures, designed to withstand a direct hit from a fully loaded airliner. They also have a huge 20-storey tall building which is maintained at near-vacuum in order to literally suck up all of the released materials in the unlikely event of a breach. I'm not sure what German reactor containment structures look like. And AFAIK, the vacuum building is a fairly unusual safety feature.salm wrote:i just read an article about these types of attacks on nuclear power plants. they said that a lot of plants would not be able to withstand such attacks. that´s why some folks were proposing to build high concrete nets to fend of air planes.

Thankfully, a friend of mine who lives in Madrid was unhurt, as was his fiancee.
