Church Nixes Good Friday Fenway Hot Dogs

Post by JME2 »

Hot Doggies!
BOSTON - Opening Day ticket holders at Boston's Fenway Park this year who are Catholic face a dilemma: the Boston Archdiocese said since the afternoon game against the Toronto Blue Jays (news) falls on Good Friday, they must refrain from eating meat, including hot dogs, sausages and pepperoni pizza.

"We're already getting all kinds of requests for dispensation to eat meat," said the Rev. Christopher J. Coyne, a spokesman for the archdiocese. However Coyne said that after a meeting to discuss the requests, Boston church leaders decided a baseball game was too weak an excuse to duck the no-meat rule.

"I would hope it was just an oversight when they were doing the schedule," Coyne told the Boston Herald. "I think it's very insensitive to the huge number of people who are Christians and fans."

In 1995 and 2000, Cardinal Bernard F. Law, then the head of the archdiocese, allowed local Catholics to eat meat when St. Patrick's Day fell on a Friday during Lent.

I like the part where Rev. Coyne says that the scheduling was insensitive to Christians. As if the MLB actually checks this sort of thing before scheduling a game.

Good. If I really shouldn't eat meat on Fridays, such an edict should not be suspended for something so pedestrian as a baseball game.

People should either follow the rules or say no. They shouldn't pretend to be good and then back out at the drop of a hat.

I thought the last sentence was the most humorous. Law was such a corrupt ass.

Not that the new guy's any better.

fish sticks would likely have more nutritional value than hot dogs at the very least. of course this is under the assumption that hot dogs are really meat. . . .

Wow, this whole dilemma scores a 9.9 on my "I don't give a shit" meter.

That last tenth is for the fact that the dilemma is mildly amusing.

I love it how the Catholics are so devout that the sacrifices they believe their savior made for them and the symbolic sacrifice of meat as recognition thereof is not as important as their love for the Red Sox. It's no wonder they never make it to the World Series.

Either you ignore it as a silly ritual or you think it means something and thus follow the custom. To think it really means something but not as much as having extra enjoyment at a rounders, sorry I mean baseball, game reflects badly on them indeed.

Hmmm, that makes me think about corn dogs. Corn batter around something that contains a hog's cornhole. Mmmmm, they just get more apetizing the longer this thread goes.

Anyway, I'm sure those people stupid enough to be both devout Christians and devout Red Sox fans can find some other way to enjoy the game. Skip the meat, drink more beer and eat some nachos. :)

I did find the "insensitive to Christians" comment pretty funny. Nice and presumptuous of him to assume that anyone gave a shit and that all Christians are Catholic.

Most American Catholics I've met seem to think that all those rules are merely suggestions. :D

As you pointed out, he started the Reformation, which led to the current situation today, in which I can be a non-Catholic Christian and, thus, eat meat at ballgames.
