When I start research or construction it seems like it is not being built or researched. Is this normal or is there something more I have to do?

Points each turn go into the research pool depending on how many research labs you got, wait a few turns and you'll see the meter building.

I'm in Galaxy 83, awaiting the arrival of 408 more players to start the countdown. I am Grand Vizier Lord Chuckles of the Chucklehead Star Alliance. Who's with me?!?

How could you be in trouble in galaxy 83? It hasn't even started yet.

I'm a newbie at the game, so perhaps others can set me straight if I'm wrong, but if you haven't done anything it's because you *can't* do anything yet. I've set things in motion in the queue (such as building a scout ship, constructing buildings, sending my scout ships to nearby systems, etc.), but those things won't happen until the game actually starts. And the countdown can't start until 377 more players join the galaxy.

Like I said, I'm a newbie, so I might be out to lunch about the whole process. In any case, I'm using the time to peruse the various strategy guides for an idea about how to proceed. I don't think I'll be among the leaders, for various reasons (including having to deal with a job getting in the way), but I'll give it a shot anyways.

Also true. Chances are slim you'll end in top 20 and get a star. When your new, surviving alone is quite an achievement (hell, even I still die sometimes)

Reading the forums and guides is a good idea, think i made a mess of my gal 82 account. I have 3 colonies and almost 0 creds and resources, make 60-90 prod/ore per tick, but losing creds each tick. And i killed my first ship! hehe had no idea, now i'm getting messages, whoops.

thats normal (unless your toag). No biggy, credits are the least valuable recource and the game is still early. A few techs in economy and you get a positive balance.

Got one planet colonized and two more found(one with 84 hab and 79 ore con, woot!) right now I'm getting my planets set up for resources before I colonize/find the others. After getting the intial shield up, I'm about to get an ore up then start on a production up. I have plenty of creds, my total upkeep is in the 30s and my income is in the high 20s so I loose very little every hour.

The grey planet you see on map. Its will become yours as soon as you can explore it (by sending a ship to it)

Sure, if you have megaopli, fast:) My pop is already up around 2.5 million, though my production and shit is still low. I've only colonized one planet besides my homeworld, and it's about as good as LV-426 or whatever the colony in Aliens :)

its not a bad idea to build on your first 10 planets 1 or 2 planets with nothing but megapoli so you get a lot faster the population needed to colonise

oh and if any1 is handy with 3d design this topic may be intersting for you:

Shit I am screwed. IE isn't working right now (might have to remove and then re-install), thus I can't colonise jack at the moment.

Heh, I must be in an awfully isolated corner of the galaxy, as I have not even seen another player yet, and have scouted 20 planets or so.

I hate you all. I have created exactly ONE scout. I have ONE other colonized planet, and that's IT. I've not seen a single person, either. I am a useless bag of tit-fat to the SDN alliance. And by the way, do you need to establish contact with an empire in order to ally with them?

Okay, so who's signed up for Gal 83 besides me?
