Need Duke3d help - can't get it running

Post by Hamel »

I have the Duke 3d Kill-a-ton collection~

Wanted to install Duke so I could try the JonoF source port, so I did

Every time I start up Duke3d, either through the exe itself or the JonoF setup, I get a could not detect fm chip error. Using google didn't give me an answer. There was a sound patch, but it only applied to a crash that happened during game play.

I've tried compatibility for '95 (I'm using XP, in case you don't know) but it didn't help.

The card I have a is a Sound Blaster PCI 128
"Right now we can tell you a report was filed by the family of a 12 year old boy yesterday afternoon alleging Mr. Michael Jackson of criminal activity. A search warrant has been filed and that search is currently taking place. Mr. Jackson has not been charged with any crime. We cannot specifically address the content of the police report as it is confidential information at the present time, however, we can confirm that Mr. Jackson forced the boy to listen to the Howard Stern show and watch the movie Private Parts over and over again."

DN3D uses the old DOS method of accessing sound, not the native Windows or DirectSound methods. You can try using VDMS to emulate a real-mode sound card in Windows.

VDMS doesn't work. This is what I end up with:

Code: Select all

Duke Nukem 3D Full Version v1.3D
Using: 'DUKE3D.GRP'.
KB_Startup: Keyboard Started
Compiling: 'GAME.CON'.
Including: 'DEFS.CON'.
Including: 'USER.CON'.
Found 0 warning(s), 0 error(s).
Code Size:48516 bytes(1425 labels).
Using Setup file: 'DUKE3D.CFG'
CONTROL_Startup: Mouse Present
Loading art header.
Checking music inits.
Checking sound inits.
Sound Blaster not responding on selected port.
Disabling music hasn't stopped the errors.

If it helps, I had that problem once when using Atomic edition. It occurred whenever I connected to another server who was using a different version (i.e. Atomic ed was 1.4, while normal Duke which everyone uses is 1.3). Even though my sound card is Turtle beach, I chose the "Sound Blaster" option anyway, so give that a whirl.

BTW, I have both versions of Duke. Wanna create a Duke multiplayer club? It's a dying game, and since heat.net died I can't find anyone else to play with on that. :?

What really burns my ass about this is that I never had this problem with Doom, and it's an older game!

Run VDMS on the setup first, setup the sound card then run VDMS on duke3d.exe

Results in:

Playback failed, possibly due to an invalid or conflicting IRQ.

Hrm. Was the BLASTER variable set? E.g. "SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 H5"

Also, ensure your copy of DN3D is wholly patched from the main site.

1) Where can I find the Blaster variable? Is it command line or something?

2) The Duke3d exe is 1.3d, but there are no patches to take it from 1.3d to 1.x. It's only 1.4 to 1.5. What's the deal with that?

Type "SET" on the command prompt to see which ones have been set.

As for the patch ... no idea.

I tried your example and got the fm chip error again. Then I used VDMS on it afterwards and got an IRQ error.

1.3 is meant to be itself, I believe...

1.4 would be Atomic edition which you have to buy ( :? ) and 1.5 is the addon for Atomic ed, "Plutonium pack".

I actually just got duke3d working with that port. Are you trying to run Duke through the original game, or are you using the port? See, I think one of the big reasons the guy made that port was because most people have a great deal of difficulty getting duke3d to run on winXP. Without the port, I couldn't get the game to run at'll, running it with the port, everything work perfectly.
