I need a good freeware FTP program

Post by Shinova »

I'm using SmartFTP right now, but after using it for over a year, I'm now sick of it.

I'd like suggestions for a good FTP program. Any?

I like SmartFTP, and I'd stick with it if I were you. I heard that CuteFTP is pretty good, though.

i've used (sort of) CuteFTP before. not too terribly bad and surprisingly a simple interface for it. a simple google search should be able to turn it up.

Believe it or not, I'm comfortable enough with the command-line FTP program as it is.

Other than that, if I feel like GUI'ing I use WS_FTP Limited, though I don't think it's released anymore. :/

NcFTP. To upload things to shell account I use scp for individual files or rsync for entire directory trees. Command line sftp sucks.

It's not free, but LeapFTP is the best GUI FTP I've ever used. Nice, clean interface...none of the bloat CuteFTP has and none of the sheer aggravation of SmartFTP.

If you're running Linux, gftp is good if you want a GUI.

I second that, I'm very happy with CoreFTP, it managed to figure out that I had access to the levels that most of the other FTP programs couldnt quite work out that I had access to.

If you need connection to a secured server (like I do for my faculty account) you could use WinSCP It's free and I'm satisfied with him.
I didn't tried it for ftp connections on the internet, as I am behind a firewall and my IP is not routable.

I've used nothing but wsftp (le edition). Its from ipswitch. What more do you want? 90% of the time I just command line it.

I've already heard of the major GUI-driven FTP programs. If you're ready for a walk on the wild side, there are command-line driven FTP clients that come standard-issue with Windows 9x/NT x.xx, and the numerous flavors of Unix and Linux.

Though I prefer something with a bit more security than standard FTP myself (which has virtually none to speak of,) such as PSFTP which is also command-line driven, but command-line FTP isn't that hard to use.

Also, rsync is faster since it only sends the differences between files (and also does that for binaries).

Not everyone can use SFTP.

Rsync is not always an option.
