Old (really old) games you miss.

Post by Crown »

Okay my first ever computer was an old Mac, and apple macintosh II to be exact.

Compared to the PC and IBM crap that was out there on the market it was lightyears ahead (yes even with its black and white screen).

But there was one game, and only one game that I absolutely loved, and I sometimes dust off the old dinosaur just so I can play this game.

Dark Castle was the name of this entertainment masterpiece, and of course it's sequel (Return to Dark Castle?) was also a favourite.

So what about you guys? What old game do you miss?

Sim Earth. No wait i still have and play that. I used to play it on my familie's IBM multimedia pc. And because i own it, it was legal to dl and run on my current box. Sadly, that was also the only computer i could ever get to play jet fighter II which i do miss. OFC at this point i could get a better flight sim for a few bux0rs of the net or at wally world so it's not worth it to try and figure out hwo to make it work.

Master of Orion. The first of the real turn bassed strategy games to hit it big. Relatively simplified but with options for the more advanced player who wants to try new things. Large galaxy, lots of play time, great replayability.

Wing Commander Privateer. The first of the simulation games that let you go anywhere and do just about anything. Pirate, merchant, bount hunter, its all good. Large area to explore and do as you pleased.

I miss Starcontrol 2. I still have it, but when I say I "miss" it I mean I miss the "newness" of it. I miss being able to play a game the first time round and figure out all the puzzles and solutions and storylines. I wish I could replay it without any knowledge of the game beforehand.

Duke Nukem 3D

Anyone know if there are still game networks for this? :/
Heat.net died long ago, and it was the last place to even start games.

I used to have a fiend who was a Duke fanatic, I myself have never played it ... was it like a first person shooter game? Like Wolfenstien (or whatever the hell it was called)?

The original PacMan on arcade machines. Now everywhere you go, it's Ms. PacMan.

And Oregon Trail. Definitely Oregon Trail.

Yes it was, but it had a very tongue in cheek style to it. Quite a lot of fun. :D

Personally, I miss my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. Lots of fun.

I thought that was just on Arcade though? Was it also available on PC?

Although if you are going to mention TMNT, you might as well mention the Simpsons game, as it was virtually identical.

I had it on PC, it was on 4 5 1/2" floppy disks.

A big difference between this and the Simpsons game (As I remember it, I was playing these at age 6.) was that in the TMNT game you could walk around and pick which level you went into.

Civ, AFAIK. However, there was the minor niggling issue where Phalanxes could defeat BBs

I don't know, recently when I heard a song on my mom cell that was the exact tone from an old game, but I can't remember which. I knew it was some sort of edutainment thing, but still.

Sim Earth, meh, but Sim Ant was the bomb. Nothing like leading 50 fellow ants against a spider just to prove your dominance. Or taking over a warrior, tunneling deep until you fround a hole and then making a hit and run on red's queen. Shame the game was pretty much over once you beat that first ant pile, after that the games pretty much one you just have to wait for your colonies to spead and clear up whatever problematic colonies last.

Sim Ant was sooo bloody fun. I especialy liked how much fun could be had colonizing certain parts of the house.

Leasure Suit Larry and the Land of the Lounge Lizzards (or some such thing). Great game, the goal of the game is to get layed. Doesn't get any better than that. :D
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

Quest for Glory 1-4.

I bought the collection in 1999 when it was worth only 20 bucks. But I lost the disc, and now it's worth over a hundred bucks, easily. Glad I made a copy...

I do miss being able to play the games on slow-ass computers as the developers intended, though. On fast computers you can do all the character building really, really fast, so you don't get the same effect. Plus there's the fact that I know the games like the back of my hand now, so there's no sense of wonder like there used to be when I was a kid.

Ultima III to VII Goddamn best rpg ever, inovative and fun

ELITE! The first and ultimate space sim. Trade stuff from Lave.

Or Blast a python with military lasers scoop up the loot and sell for profit.

Wasted many hours on that game.

You still have SC 2?!?!?! I HATE THEE WITH THE FIRES OF A THOUSAND SUNS!! Arrgh! SC was the best game EVER! I have it on my 3DO, but one night my exwife got pissed cause the game got more attention than her and she introduced it to the wall! How I miss Star controll and SC2....Long live the spathi empire.... Why are you still reading this?! Shouldn't you be bowing before your Ur Quan Masters?!

I also Miss M.U.L.E. What a great and well-executed C64/tandy game. Also all those sierra AGI (thanks BorkBorkBork76 [I'll never be able to remember AIM SN vs. SDN SN]) and SCI games.

For any SC2 fans there is a freeware version out there.

Penny Arcade had the link for a while and I believe we still have it somewhere here as well.

It's the 3DO version.
