That's what armor and mechanized infantry is for. But in most cases I ended up buying out all the other civilizations. Diplomats are fun.phongn wrote:Civ, AFAIK. However, there was the minor niggling issue where Phalanxes could defeat BBs
Old (really old) games you miss.

Air taxi for the amiga! Mental 5 player on-the-same-screen action! I wish they'd remake that.

Okay, newest 'old' game: Shareware Doom. I swear, I spent about three hours straight trying to figure out how to beat the two Barons at the end. (This was when I still used a joystick for FPS).
The original Gauntlet (Red Warrior needs food...badly!)
A nifty little space shooter by the name of Xenon. This game absolutely ruled, you had the typical shooter jet that you moved around and shot down other little jets. There was also, though, a cool tank mode where you could go back and forth, killing the stuff you missed and picking up the powerups you couldn't grab before. Not to mention the fact that there was a little strategy involved as you could only hit certain things with the jet and certain things with the tank.
An awesome, surprisingly deep game for the NES called Legacy of the Wizard. I still occasionally fire it up and try to play it through. I have yet to beat it.
The original NES version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, another unexpectedly deep (replayability-wise) game.
The arcade version of Aliens.
The original Mortal Combat.

Impossible Mission, it was on my bro's Commodore 64. He had a couple of other games. I wish I could get ahold of this one, because I remember him mentioning it was unbeatable, or at least damn near impossible.

X-Com: UFO Defense
Hands down one of the most beautifully crafted strategy games of all time.
Star Control 2
Awesome beyond the capacity of my human emotions to consider.
Master of Orion 2
Some would argue the first was superior, whereas I thought this was the perfect sequel. Possibly even the perfect game.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms 2
This is an old SNES game. The best multiplayer experience I've had in a long time.

Even though I played Star Control 2 nearly a decade after its release I loved the game. Star Control 2 is an amazing game that combines an incredible story, a dynamic universe and excellent gameplay like no other.Stofsk wrote:I miss Starcontrol 2. I still have it, but when I say I "miss" it I mean I miss the "newness" of it. I miss being able to play a game the first time round and figure out all the puzzles and solutions and storylines. I wish I could replay it without any knowledge of the game beforehand.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

The game combines platforming with puzzle solving....with a 12 hour real time limit.

I downloaded SCII From sourceforge (Don't worry it's legal.) It's actually called the Ur-Quan masters and it IS for all intents and purposes, the 3DO version. And it is awesome. I Still remember my first encounter with the spathi and their talks of the ULTIMATE EVIL! You know, the evil which is largely unmanifest and exists just outside the range of the most sensitive scanning equipment, leaving to question it's methods and intentions, which, obviously lends itself to it's own nefarious ends.

I've played this game hundreds of times. It's not impossible, but it's definitely very hard. I think my average is winning one of every 3 or 4 games.
