What has SD.net taught you?

Post by YT300000 »

It gave me increased tolerance. Scary, isn't it?

When I first came here, I was an extreme homophobe, thanks to my fundie mom. But here, I was around gays, and realized that they aren't so different. It got me thinking, and my revulsion and hatred towards them melted away. While I don't like the idea of two men having sex, I hold nothing against gays anymore.

So, what has SD.net done for/taught you?

I was way out on the libertarian crazy fringe when I came here, I was a borderliner tinfoiler. I was more antiwar than anyone - no seriously, ANYONE on this board. SDN has pulled me more into the mainstream.

1. Even admin-approved registrations can't stop morons from getting in.
2. I've become more conservative on a lot of issues, like nuclear power and economics.

I taught me to be extremely careful when clicking on off-topic links, cause "you never know what you're gonna get."

This place has also corrected several science related misconceptions I had, and taught me how to be a better debater (I use what I learn here on another forum).

I've learned the same things from SD.net that I've learned at SB.com. I have a better understanding of science.

That I am normal. 8)
They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong

But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

SDN has taught me nothing knew, it has only confirmed and reinforced the following prejudices:

1) I am a sexy, sexy beast.
2) I am much cooler than the average fellow.

You see, Pablo knows that it is not just the good looking women who need to be loved. It is also the elderly, the overweight, the homely, and the four legged animals who must occasionally recieve the--how do you say?--ah yes... the orgasm. This is not to say that Pablo actively seeks out such women, no no, but with a towering masculinity such as his, he often finds it imperative to quickly quench the fires of passion lest his testicles explode or something.

That is the mystery... that is Pablo. The man, the enigma, the Lothario.

SD.net taught me one thing that I will remember for the remainder of my days:

How to heavyweight wrestle with myself at night.
Babylon 5: In the Beginning quote:

General Lefcourt: "My people can handle themselves. We took care of the Dilgar. We can take care of the Minbari."
Londo Mollari: "Ahh, arrogance and stupidity all in the same package. How efficient of you."

Quiet, you. 8)

I learnt about the wonderful world of Logical Fallacies. I take delight in pointing out how people's claim to "logic" is actually irrational and erroneous. I especially enjoy demolishing people who act as though they're already "logical."

[edit]Most of these "arguments" have taken place in real life with people whom I once considered to be intelligent, reasonable human beings. I discovered that in actual fact they were adept at bullshitting.

Chavez is just the GTA:VC parody of a certain tradition of the sexy but self-absorbed and bizarre Latin male. Chris Kattan on SNL did a hilarious Antonio Banderas show on the very same principles. It was all jokes like Banderas is interviewing a pathologist about Lyme Disease and asks questions like:

"The Lyme disease, you are catching this from the fruit, yes?"
and
"The thing that is most standing out about you is the--how do you say?--ah yes, the breasts."

And then he unbuttons his shirt slowly while Horatio Sanz protests that it is "too hot, no, too hot!"
