The color of numbers?

Post by justifier »

This is inspired by a conversation I had in math class.

When you think of certain numbers do you think of or see them as certain colors? Some numbers I get nothing specific, but for some the association is very strong.
As an example one through ten:
1-Black
2-Blue
3-Yellow
4-Purple
5-Red
6-Blue
7-Orange
8-Green
9-Blue
10-Black

Me neither. I guess it's something that gets into your head when you think of it too much.

Fascinating. I can't say I've experienced this, specifically, I have experienced something similar. I started a thread about it here.

Might have something to do with number charts and what color they were when you learned them as a child.

I sort of do this, too, but with ranges of colors, ie. 20-29 are shades of green, 30-39 are shades of blue, probably because 2 is green and 3 is blue. I also do it with words. I remember making a list of words that were particular "colors" when I was younger. My parents thought I was nuts. :)

never really thought of numbers in terms of colors. though if i had to put 'em together, i'd probably come up with something like this:

0 - Black
1 - White
2 - Blue
3 - Green
4 - Red
5 - Yellow
6 - Orange
7 - Purple
8 - Pink
9 - Cyan

black and white are appropriate for 0 and 1 to me, as they represent on and off. then blue, green and red, for the three base colors. yellow, purple, and pink represent the more common combinations of the three base colors, as does cyan.

Okay, seriously, no, I don't associate colors with numbers. I do associate lack of color with music, though. (Some songs are "black" while others aren't. Anyway...)

In psychology what you're talking about (colors with numbers/letters/words) is called synethesia, meaning "To perceive together."

If you're not bored enough from my description (or perhaps, too bored at the moment), here is a link to info about it.

Hmm,

0 = Nothing
1 = Red
sqrt(2) = White
2 = Blue
3 = Light blue/Aquamarine
pi = Ultraviolet
sqrt(-1) = The Colour out of Space

I was going to read about it, but with those godawful background and text combinations, forget it.

You skipped a 0 in your first post. Hence my observation.

And the same format is used for html color.
