You who advocated getting a Boatswain's punch, or whatever it was called?

And tacking is perfectly valid! But I was talking more along the lines of watering down the crossing the line ceremony. Damn them.

Well they have to keept them somewhere. Most ships don't have boliers anymore so it's not like you can get a BT Punch like the old days. You'll just have to go down to the Bo'sun's locker and get a Bo'sun's punch. While you're there get your complementary link of anchor chain.

Can't even call anyone "wog" anymore because some people felt that it was racists. Not that context should have anything to do with it since it's supposed to be short for pollywog. :?

I also bet you haven't blown the EOOW yet either? No tradition these days. I suppose you'll get a shot at the ship's horn/whistle when you work on your ESWS.

Ok, so maybe it wasn't you.

I've heard "blown the EOOW" before, thank you very much.

Did I ever tell you about when the engineers convinced a New Engineering officer that one of the pieces of equipment was a "Flux capacitor"?

Supposedly it was also a term that slavers used to refer to African slaves while they were shipping them to America.

I don't know how true it is or how prevalent it was but someone convinced someone high enough up in the chain of command on my ship that all non-shellbacks were to be referred to as "polywog" and not "wog".

No one could be hit either. Which is kind of a shame considering we had this excellently shillelagh that had been hanging around in one of our spaces since the ship went around the horn.

Why do I have a bad feeling that I might just have an idea what that is...?

And what do I get for my SWO pin, huh? The chance to dress up in chokers and try and fool chicks into thinking I'm a pilot?

Nothing! Really, nothing!

Damn you, Chief, just want to go and fuck everything up, don't you?

(See, that is on topic, since I said "fuck" in there. Go fuck yourself.)

It's the ships whistile. It makes the Eeeeeee OWWWW! sound. You usually have to run a chit to blow the EOOW. As it's traditional for newbies onboard ship most people in the chain should be glad to sign the chit, especially the Enginering Officer of the Watch. :D
RogueIce wrote:And what do I get for my SWO pin, huh? The chance to dress up in chokers and try and fool chicks into thinking I'm a pilot?
I don't get that. Why would the chicks dig the pilots? It's not like they'll ever get to go up in the plane with them. With the SWO guys they will be able to go on the boat and maybe when he's CO of his own ship someday he'll hide them away in his cabin for a couple of days between ports one of(my C.O.'s did this).

You would be preaching to the choir there, pal. I never could understand why pilots get such a huge rep, and why everyone wants to be one. We're the real Navy damn it! Damn you Top Gun!! Hell, look at JAG: they got the regular lawyers (ie, never served as a URL), a Marine, a Sub officer, a SEAL, and a bloody pilot. But do you see a single, solitary SWO pin on any of 'em?

Bloody Hell! Roberts served a tour at sea as a regular URL, and so did Sims, but did either of 'em get the SWO pin? Granted, maybe PAOs on carriers don't normally do that, but still...

It's a bitch to get any kind of Surface Warfare pin on a carrier although I think the officers get them done more often than the enlisted.

Why do I get the feeling we should beg an Admin to split this and send it to The Mess? :)

Yeah, I can imagine. But it can be done I think. WHo's more likely to get it? Grounded aviators or the SWOs on board?

And, for that matter, what the fuck do SWOs do on a CVN? Are they even there in any noticable way?

What really gets me about the whole SWO/flyer thing is that, according to one of our OCs while we were redesigning the banner for the unit webpage, is that rather than use a ship, we should use a fuckin' F-14, because that's what most people would associate with for the Navy! It's re-de-fuckin-dick-ulous! People associate a god damned aircraft with the Navy before they would a ship!

I have heard there is a persecution complex from a retired SWO O5...I can certainly see where that comes from...

It is definately not going to be the aviators. They might get a bunch of quals but they are still primarilly concerned with maintaining their qualifications to fly. Partially because they get to keep that flight pay kicker and because that's what they all got into the Navy to do.
And, for that matter, what the fuck do SWOs do on a CVN? Are they even there in any noticable way?
Same shit they do on other ships. We had at least one SWO who worked in Combat. He took a lot of razzin from the brown shoes but he was shit hot and worked his way up to having some pretty important jobs in combat.
What really gets me about the whole SWO/flyer thing is that, according to one of our OCs while we were redesigning the banner for the unit webpage, is that rather than use a ship, we should use a fuckin' F-14, because that's what most people would associate with for the Navy! Why not use an anchor so it can be the Navy and the Marines? The F-14 is double stupid now because they are getting rid of them. He might as well have you put Tom Cruise's ass on your patch if he wants to use an F-14. You don't know how many boneheads I went to bootcamp with that were stupid enough to join the Navy and take some shit flight deck jobs because of Top Gun.
I have heard there is a persecution complex from a retired SWO O5...I can certainly see where that comes from...
I can see that. They certainly aren't the glamour boys like the pilots and the sub guys like to talk shit about anyone who cruises the surface.

Oh yeah, to stay with the topic of the thread....Fun Time Navy

Yeah, I know what EOOW is, that's why it was so disturbing. Just the reality turned out to be benign, albeit putting in a chit that says "to blow the EOOW" isn't so hot either.
Tsyroc wrote:It is definately not going to be the aviators. They might get a bunch of quals but they are still primarilly concerned with maintaining their qualifications to fly. Partially because they get to keep that flight pay kicker and because that's what they all got into the Navy to do.
Well, our CO did it, but I think it was on a small boy since we was a helo pilot...can't remember if we was on CVNs or the small ones though. Gotta check the bio. But he does have his wings and a SWO pin.
Tsyroc wrote:Why not use an anchor so it can be the Navy and the Marines? The F-14 is double stupid now because they are getting rid of them. It's not a patch, but a website banner, like the big Star Destroyer on top of here. So, on one side, we got some picture of Marines in cammies saluting the flag, and on the other side, something for the Navy, while in the middle, the "official" USF thingy we have to use "or else" and the Navy seal (one I use in my avatar, not the DON one) and Marine seal (I've seen them without Department of the Navy in it, but we use the one with it). And the current pic I saw was F-18s parked on a flight deck (which is close I guess), but when we pulled a pic of a DDG underway, that's where the "people identify Navy with F-14s thing came in. I'll keep you abreast of what the final product is.

And yeah, that's great. Everyone wants to fly F-14s, and last I heard, they'll be gone in 2007. So when do we commission? 2007.
Tsyroc wrote:I can see that. They certainly aren't the glamour boys like the pilots and the sub guys like to talk shit about anyone who cruises the surface.
yeah, but we're the real Navy. Nobody can see the subs anyway, and without us, the flyboys might as well be with the Air Force because they'll lose their uniqueness without someone to drive the ships.

We're what makes the Navy what it is, but does anyone notice? Nooo... Damn flyboys.

I agree with you, Tsyroc. Fun Time Navy...or maybe Fun Time Naval Aviation? 8)
