Nasty food additives
It's on the news today that the chicken nuggets sold in McDonald's contains dimethylpolysiloxane. Dimethylpolysiloxane is better known as silicon, which is used to stop the nasty little bastards from frothing during deep frying. It's also the stuff they make breast implants from. Hmm hmm, plastic and chicken! Actually, silicon is not that uncommon in processed foods. So anyway, what's the nastiest food additive? And why?

That doesn't sound like a very appealing prospect...Stofsk wrote:Why? Scare the pants off of me, Kernel. The Kernel wrote:Read The Fast Food Nation if you are really curious but fair warning: this book will make you think twice about walking into a fast food restaurant.
Anyways, you got me, I haven't actually read it yet. My sister did, and she told me a few of the worst stories (like the "breeding" of the KFC chickens and what not) but I don't remember the details all that well. Still, it was enough to keep me out of fast food restaurants.

I read Fast Food Nation for Econ last semester. Apparently, chickens are fed cattle meat and cattle are fed chicken meat. Fun stuff.

Anything regarding KFC breeding freak variants of chickens is complete and utter bullshit.
I really don't see what the big hoopla is over additives, though. Especially preservatives...

Actually the FDA allows up to 1% rat in pure beef, allows up to 5% sawdust filler in white or wheat bread, the bargin bread brands list it as Cellulose in the incrediants. I learned this watching 60min when I was a kid.

one of the original ingredients in early coca cola was actually cocaine, iirc.Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. Smi wrote:Weren't people putting all sorts of nasty non-food crap into food before the Pure Food and Drug Act was passed in the early 20th century?

Please forgive my inability to accept that, based on the source. The Yosemite Bear wrote:Actually the FDA allows up to 1% rat in pure beef, allows up to 5% sawdust filler in white or wheat bread, the bargin bread brands list it as Cellulose in the incrediants. The pure food and drug act didn't so much ban additives in food as ban meat that was hosting advanced bacterial civilizations from going to market. It also banned most patent medicine.Darth_Zod wrote:one of the original ingredients in early coca cola was actually cocaine, iirc.Asst. Asst. Lt. Cmdr. Coca Cola started out as wine spiked with cocaine. That stopped when the city of Atlanta banned alcohol. So they switched to kola nut extract, cocaine, and water. By the time the Pure Food and Drug Act passed, Coca Cola had long since eliminated the cocaine, and the drink was being sold as a beverge, not medicine.
