Although we do have the civil war types over here too.

Funny, the local American Indian population keep considering invading the 6-12th century faires. Since some of them actually to use throwing axes for their professional business.

Eh, hitting your friends with weapons is one thing, but roughing it in the woods in enforced garb is something that I traditionally prefer to be paid for.
I'm also not a big fan of authority figures in my leisure activities.

Isn't that the thing that has safety rules that its members interpret as being instant defeat in real world combat?

The fights are pased on the honor system, and general rules are 'if it hit hard enough to sting through my heavy armor, it was most likely a good hit'. Since most fighters have padded armor protecting their body and a minimum of 14guage steel helmets, even the rattan sticks we use for weapons don't always cause enough of a sting to register.
This isn't TV Wrestling coordination here: the SCA fighters swing full-force with all the dedication and drive of Boxers in the ring. Yet we have far less injuries than even high-school football. Most injuries I've seen have been for mashed fingers or a mis-tagged wrist. Broken bones are rare, even in the mass battles of thousands.

So in extreme laymans terms, what IS the SCA and is there something like it in australia?

Sounds like LARPing to me, just with more rules and more women.

Basically, you dress up and hit people with swords.

We don't seem to have it in Europe because we actually have history.

The SCA is a international organization dedicated to preserving and teaching the arts, sciences, and pagentry of the Medieval Ages. We do have an Aussie branch, in Syndey and Melbourne iirc.

IB? Check the link. The Europeans all belong to the Kingdom of Drachenwald. Mostly they started around US Military Bases, but the idea spread.

RavenWing, This is the first I'd heard of a recreation like that. Where would they get the Worgs and Eagles, anyway? Still, check the SCA link for Austrailia, there might be smaller groups in your area.

I actually meant rules like "don't ever turn your back from your opponent" or "pink armor is prohibited" or "never swing a sword from the outside to the inside if it's tuesday" that result in immediate disqualification, but a lot of its more "creative" members have interpreted as meaning that it would result in your death in real combat.

Got just the man, actually. :P One of the most active members in the local branch is known as Little John, and for a very good reason. He looks the part. 7 feet tall, massive, and has a gigantic beard. :D Will that do?

There was a thread about it somewhere in this board, about why a normal sword would own a lightstaff, because "you have to turn your back to your opponent and according to SCA rules that means losing" even if nobody actually manages to score a hit. Guess people that turns their backs on others automatically explode :)

The combat rules are mostly a load of crap as far as how you'd fight with the weapons goes. Also, the level of armour required is well beyond what would be of real use...I've sparred full on with rattan weapons before, and even without armour injuries can be minimal.

Yeah, that one. Wonder what happened to that crazy old ChaosBurnFlame guy, he couldn't get into his head that just because boxers get disqualified for punching their opponents under the belt doesn't mean that punching somebody else in the groin = you die

Actually I knew a female left handed duelist who would do that on purpose when dealing with really mean woman hating/abusing jerks....

No.

'Masturbator" is not a word used In Period. (roughly 600-1650 AD)
So what did they call them back then? No doubt people did masturbate at the time; it is the universal pastime.
Excepting those with ready access to sheep, of course.
Superman wrote:Yeah, and whatever they called it back then, that will be me. What is it?
My guess is that the biblical term for the practise would be the likeliest word used in-period. So perhaps "Othkar the Onanist" might work as your persona?

The problem with the SCA is that they all take themselves way too seriously. I for one would love it if some SCA group would model themselves off the movie Monty Python And The Holy Grail complete with k-ni-gits with "horses" who are just serfs banging coconut shells together. The Barony of Swamp Castle.
