I'll be going to New York and I want to know...

Post by Stofsk »

... Where I should go, or what I should do?

I will be leaving on the first of April, and with my brother and mother I'll be going to Hungary for at least two weeks (maybe more). On the way back we'll be stopping off in the US at New York and Los Angeles, but we'll be spending a couple days in NY (and only 1 day in LA), so I'd like to know what I'll be in for.

First up, who here lives in New York and can tell me what's what and so on?

Secondly, what's your city like? What are some things I should know, or be expecting? Where are some places I can visit?

I'd appreciate whatever help anyone can give. :)

NYC rocks. Do the museums, Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Broadway, eat hot dogs, knishes, and deli sandwiches, this is really an exercise in futility because there's no limit to what's available for you in NYC.

I'm studying for the CPA exam. Have a nice summer, and if you're down just sit back and realize that Joe is off somewhere, doing much worse than you are.

Be sure to wear a tee-shirt that says "I love Osama bin Laden".

You know what? I love giving people really bad advice.

Don't forget to go to see some live theatre; Broadway has some of the best in the world. Tickets can usually be expensive, but if you shop around and look for student discounts, you can usually get decent seats for affordable prices.

On further reflection I would also suggest:

1) Metropolitan Museum of Art
2) Rockefeller Center
3) The United Nations
4) Rose Center for Earth & Space
5) South Street Seaport
6) Statue of Liberty (duh)

It is on the 37th pier IIRC. You can find in the tourist maps or one of the many tourist booklets available in NY.

Pick up a copy of TimeOut New York once you're here. As for recomendations, go to museums, Broadway, etc. Don't walk in Central Park after dark in groups less than 5. :P

Have a very nice day.

if you want to see a show, and don't want to pay a lot of money, there is a ticket office right in times square that sells heavily discounted tickets. the thing is there is no guarantee of what you will get tickets for, but most shows are usually available. It's right on the corner of 7th and Broadway.... the name escapes me at the moment.

you MUST walk over the Brooklyn Bridge. The view is AMAZING, so bring a camera! Take the subway into brooklyn and walk over towards Manhattan. You'll end up over by city hall and the courthouses.

Chinatown is crap, and Little Italy is rapidly becoming just another part of chinatown... unless you want to buy fake Gucci bags and Rolexes, forget it.

Oh yeah, you might want to check out Midtown Comics at 7th and 41st. Two-floor comic book store that also has manga and anime.

Hey! I pass through that area every day and I didn't know about it!

BoredShirtless" Not if you want current events.

Stofsk: When you see the huge-ass antenna in downtown Brooklyn, right next to the Williamsburg Building, that would be my old HS. We used to have out own radio and tv stations, but they haven't been around since the 70s, IIRC.

Have a very nice day.

Is the Jekyll and Hyde restraunt still open? It was about 6 or 7 years ago, but I dunno about now. Also, you have to get to the Statue of Liberty *early*, because there's a limit to the number of people they allow up, at least, there was last time I was in NY.

"The Wire" is the best show in the history of television. Watch it today.

Jekyll and Hyde is still open. And they don't allow anyone into the Statue of Liberty since 9/11.

Have a very nice day.

Grab something from a street vendor. Hot dogs and pretzels are usually excellent.

Go to Times Square and just wander for a bit. You can even try to buy some tickets there for a Broadway show in the evening.

If you like, you might try the hotels for some drinks and atmosphere. The Plaza, Waldorff Astoria, and Times Square Mariott (with rotating sky bar) are always good picks.

THe Met is cool. I just went there again a week ago. ALthough...i hate how they give little or no style or historical background for their art pieces. It is hard as hell to write about them then.

Just FYI, MoMA is currently undergoing renovation and all the exhibits are in Queens right now.
