Windows 2000 and Windows XP do have a native command-line mode, but it is extremely limited -- really, it is only for restoring some stuff.

Is the command line EDIT still there on windows? Also, aren't there obscure commands for editing the registry and such?

yup

In both 2000 and XP.

EDIT still lives on, and you can merge entries into the registry via regsvr32 but you can't directly edit it.

I've also noticed heavy multitasking loads don't slow down other tasks as badly under Linux (at least 2.6), since I can compile and delete a large source tree and uncompress another while browsing with Firebird on a PII-450 without crashing or slowdown. Then again, this is subjective, since most of my experience with Windows is on Win9x on a PII-266. However, I've noticed 1.4GHz PIVs at school (Computer Science gets the best computers) running XP crash quite often too, especially considering I spend less time on them.
