So in other words your friend decided to attack people who were not harming him in any way, and when your friend couldn't handle it you think its just fine to defend him when HE is the agressor and the one in the wrong?Dooey Jo wrote:Let me explain the situation here:
A friend of mine really hates star trek. And when found out that there was a star trek club in a community that he was a member of he got really mad and decided to flame them, just for fun.
But the thing is, he isn't very good at retributing so the trekkies are kinda like smacking him down. I don't like to see my friends get smacked down so I'm thinking of going there and help him. But that's not a very good reason for a flame attack...
No I don't, so that's why I'm asking what you guys think about it.Alyeska wrote:

Kinda like siding with the mugger cause the intended victim beats the shit out of the mugger.
Even if they start debating SW vs ST, that is still not reason enough to flame them. It seems obvious they are new to the idea of debating ST vs SW and they logically don't know quite so much as we do. Coming in and insulting them will only polarize the sides.Dooey Jo wrote:No I don't, so that's why I'm asking what you guys think about it.Alyeska wrote:

Obvioulsy you don't seem to like the idea so I'm not going to help him.
But if their discussion becomes a SW vs. ST discussion, that will be a whole other story. Then I most certainly will help him if he would be unable to handle things himself. *gets crazy look on my face* Star Wars must win at every cost!!!
I'm not going to flame them, not until the time is right. When all their arguments are crushed and they start using insults, then is the time for flaming.Alyeska wrote:

FYI, I am a trekkie (you can find me in Mike's flame mail page). I have found some boards that attempted ST vs SW debates. Some of them had some rather absurd stuff (Runabouts taking on SSDs, 8km long SSDs, Tie-Fighters having greater firepower then anything in Trek, etc...) and I did my best to show them they were incorrect and they should try and look into it. I managed to convince a bunch of trekkies that the Executor is 17km long, not 8km long. They thought I was a warsie, but when they finally asked I told them the truth. I try and look at the truth of the matter. That meant I was teaching them to look broadly at the data before making a conclussion.
So rather then instantly flame them if a ST vs SW debate starts, try talking to them. If you flame them, you will anger them and they will ingore anything of substance you have. If you inform them through rational discussion and show them the evidence, they are more apt to accept it.
The only reason Mike flames n00bs is because Mike already has a massive website set up for people to look at and already states in his e-mail section that he will grind you to pieces if you debate him without reading his site. The same thing does not apply to people who are debating in some other forum and are not using Mike for any source of information.

I mean, it is so damn fun and they can say nothing to defend themself (other than some crazy words in klingon, which just makes the flaming a lot more fun, BTW) but it feels kinda like stealing candy from a child. But it's more fun of course. But what do you think, is it okey to flame them, just because they are sitting there and speaking klingon to each other?

And I add that yes, it's OK to flame an idiot if he gives us a reasonHowedar wrote: You are an idiot.
