Just remembered one:

Ton Phanan in Iron Fist. He died rather than living and risking to blow his squadron mates cover. Thats the first death scene in a book to make me cry.

Also Sten (or one of the other swedes) from the Beach. He's almost been bitten in half by a shark, but he still manages to swim back through some caves, across a lagoon and stagger through a forest to a settlement while carrying his injured friend, gets into a hut and says "shark" then collapses. He deserved to live, but he went down with pride

I hated how they killed Fenix. He didn't die defending his homeworld, he didn't die trying to hold off Kerrigan while othere prepared for her, not even a one on one with the bitch that back stabbed him. He just gets killed in a meaningless battle.

Oh yeah... that was rather macho, overthetop way to kill your enemy but a great last assasination!

As mentioned, Spike.

Also, I second Ton Phanan. One of my favorite characters out of the Wraith books. He went out quietly, but protecting his squadron.

Hmm...I'd also say Mr. Orange in Reservoir Dogs. Shot Mr. Blonde despite massive blood loss, and caused everyone else to kill each other.

Having just watched The Fellowship of the Ring tonight, I re-nominate Boromir.

1st Arrow: Kills three Uruk-hai

2nd Arrow: Kills two more Uruk-hai

3rd Arrow: Finally falls, archer Uruk-hai is killed by Aragorn.

I can't believe that I haven't thought of this earlier, I hope I am not repeating anyone here...

Lt. Paul Wang, S:AAB '...Tell Our Mom's We Done Our Best'

And even though Lt. Col. T.C. McQueen didn't die, he was prepared to in The Angriest Angel, and thus gets an honourable mention.

Yes I am a S:AABiet.

Did Wang die? I thought it was the last episode of the series and all it showed was him in that cargo ship blasting at aliens. He could have survived. Then it was cancelled so we never found out what happened to a lot of the characters? Or were there more episodes and I just missed the?

Wang did die. He was on the cargo portion of the APC manning the gun and he takes out one chig fighter and another crshes into the APC destroying it in a fiery blast. Interestingly enough and a real treat for those who watched it from the beginning, when Wang dies he gives a marine battle cry that echoes for several seconds in the void after the explosion...in the pilot, the master sargeant tells the recruits that the only sound you can hear in space is the battle cry of teh United States Marine...Wang tries to give him a war cry and fails miserably. I'm sure the master sargeant would have been proud of the war cry Wang gave at the end.

BTW Does anyone (Crown?) know what the mystery of the Chigs was, whether some spoiler info came out after the show ended. I thought it was a crappy way to go just after the Chig menace became more than a faceless monster.

I remeber one episode of S:AAB where they land on a moon and find some aliens with their young. They tell them to leave cuz the Earth forces were coming. Turns out the aliens where the chigs. Dont know if that was what you were looking for.

I was just watching the series again today, (that's what reminded me to post in this thread), and my God does it piss me off to know that Fox canceled that show! As for the Chigs here is my hypothesis;

Season 2

Earth's offensive has stalled, the Chigs knew of opperation 'Round Hammer' all along, and used it to their advantage. Remember Elroy L telling McQueen that the Chigs are very experienced at watching us? He wasn't boasting, in 'Choice or Chance' we see that Chigs are either A) Shape shifters, or B) Can design Chig/Human hybrids to spy on their enemy.

Wang is dead. It would be a dishonour to cheat him out of his final scene. Damphousse and Vansen might still be alive, and McQueen is out of the war.

The Chigs have managed in one foul swoope to eliminate the Head of the Joint Chiefs of staff, and kill Aerotech's CEO. At the same time, Aerotech's secret is out, and that means trouble for the Secratary General of the UN. Earth now faces distabilisation, and a new vicious Chig offensive, and the 58th is no more.

I have heard rumours of S:AAB novilisations, but all I can find is novels based on the episodes that we have seen.

It's a shame that Glen and James didn't hold the licensing rights to the series, then at least we could have read what was going to happen next, but evil Fox stopped even that. :(

I am not sure as to which 'mystery' you are refering to (there are a few of them), but I will try and answer in this way;

The Chigs aren't lying about being in space before Earth, there is too much evidence to the contrary. If they really wanted to wipe Earth out, they could have done that a million times over before Earth could have possed a threat to them. I believe that Aerotech instigated this war (for unknown reasons, although I have many theories), and bit off more than they could chew. They then began the 'cover up' to hide their shame, the Chigs were outraged even further by this action, as could be seen when the Chig ambassador chose to personally stab the CEO of Aerotech, before blowing up the confrence room.

Actually, stabbing is a very personal crime, could the Aerotech-Chig relation have been even closer?

As to why they allowed Earth to feel as if they are winning, maybe it was just to get them to lower their guard for a second.... Does anyone else think we should start a thread about this in the Other Sci-fi forum?

Didn't the Chigs also claim to be decended from biological material that had originated on Earth?

That they sure did, and they further went on to claim that they started searching the cosmos for the parent planet (Earth) of the cosmic debry (spell?) 800,000 years ago!

Hmm? No you didn't it's just at the end we see Wang go Bang, and all that's left of the 58th is Hawkes and West lying on their bunks, looking shocked. There was no actual 'confirm', but to think otherwise is a little too much wishfull thinking (trust me, it took me 8 months to finally accept it).

I really miss space:above and beyond. That was one of the most impressive sci-fi series I have ever seen. I like the way it concentrated on the effects of the war on the main characters as opposed to just showing off special effects and whatnot.
Crown, I be intrested in hearing some of your theorys as to why Armstech started the war.

I forgot one of my personal favorite macho deaths: Ivan "the Terrible" Antonov from In Death Ground. His command was shot to peices and was dying but he kept them together to reach home. The Bugs had sprung an ambush and were massacring his force with their new monitors. He could have got out but only at the cost of his covering ships. Instead he he orders them clear and charges them. His kamikaze run as described by his pupil Prescott:

Prescott felt Bichet's presence, but he couldn't take his eyes from the plot. Not even when his carriers flashed through the warp point, or when his battlecruisers followed. Not even when his flagship headed into the warp point . He stared into it, watching the abandoned units of Second Fleet's rearguard and their tattered umbrella of dying fighters as the pursing Bugs closed for the kill.

The last thing Raymond Prescott saw before Crete vanished into the warp point herself was TFNS Colorado, her weapons destroyed, her broken hull trailing atmosphere and water vapor and debris but no life
pods- never a life pod- as she redlined her surviving engines... and disapeared in an eye tearing boil oof light as she rammed one of those new monster ships head on.

It's go to be the best death scene Weber has ever written. Only Madrigal's death run comes close.
